Video: Quarter cut for Jedi warriors

A close up of the quarter cut for the universes benefit. A masterpiece of galatic warfare strategy required to eliminate the dark side (weeds).

May the force be with you. Coz if it's against you ... you'll need a bigger hammer and wedge. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

At 4.21mins and 20.83MB (WMV streaming vid) this is a keeper and loaded with .... well, you'll have to watch to find out!

Metal wedges near chainsaws makes me nervous. Too likely to have a tragedy if the bar hits the wedge. Why not use plastic wedges?

In my wedge kit I keep a short handled three pound maul for tapping wedges.

Is the quarter cut something that you use a lot? Is it better for palms?

I've seen it recommended for stems that are too small in diameter to make a traditional back cut and get a wedge into. Is that why you chose it in this application...or where you just interested in making a video? /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have to admit i made a quartercut myself this afternoon. On a backleaning 1½ foot diameter and 50foot tall poplar. Needed to rope it and two aluminum wedges. Worked well!

They're aluminium wedges Tom.

Yep, the idea is when the dia is too small for bar + wedge you 1/4 cut.

Standard college felling stuff here and mighty useful.

I just use the claw hammer a lot as it gets the job done and there's a lot of nails in palms from people hanging stags on them ... and these were no exception.

I'll spell it out for you Einstein, so it goes in the desired direction. I suppose when you are accustomed to only taking the top part of a tree out and leaving the bottom then you have no need for it hey. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When it's needed I use a rope to control the tree, not a wedge. I trust the rope a lot more.

Wedges are for loggers, for the most part.

I sometimes use rope and wedge or wedges plus hydraulic jack.
If there's a reason to do it I like to have 2 independent means working together to do the job.
I prefer the wedge down the bore cut at right angles to the hinge (through the middle of the hinge) for skinny diameter stuff. It's great not having to think about running out of room for the wedge and it allows more cutting of the hinge as required with zero risk of hitting the wedge.

Good vid Ekka. Dent has over 20 pages explaining proper wedge use that might be a good read for the doubting wankers among us.

HEY!!!Steve carries out a lot of top quality Arboriculture for various professional Arb companys ie me and a few other serious contractors

We carry out high quality work, big trees with huge crowns, crown thins and reductions etc etc all to BS3998 these trees are usualy protected and require the services of experts, this type of work, I haven't seen in any of your videos!!!!

So lets cut the BS about a once or twice a year topping job!!!!!!!

Not being funny EKKA ,but i'll post a few pics of some SERIOUS tree felling,i'm currently on a site clearance job felling 70' plus multi-stemmed willows some with serious leans, were using a 26'' bar and were going at them from both sides now thats felling!!!!! your playing at it mate!!

Hey Pete

Kevin was also trying to explain the same.

How about some series pics or vid demo.

Doesn't have to be the worlds biggest tree for some demos like a few of the Brits think, just a good steady close up of what's going on. And once the trees falling cut the vid and call it a day coz some-one will have to whine about something or other like a show and tell in the blokes dunny at festival time!

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know I was supposed to video every job and submit it, reductions are almost outlawed here and thins take their place, seldom do these jobs make good vid as the distance shots don't show the work.

For something that's done just once or twice a year he sure spends the majority of his time chatting about it and arguing for it.

Yawn, yawn ... whoopty doo. The other day I had to fell a 23m euc, I video'd it but didn't publish it as it was a flop, literally, but the 70 footers around here are only 200mm DBH. Unlike the English fat stout trees that a blind man could get around many of our trees don't have 3' DBH for 70' ht. Also more DBH is more hinge wood, no big deal. I've done stacks, bore in and go round so what? And if you have the room to fell these "monsters" big deal, it's these pokey little yards that improve your techniques and accuracy.

Also, I have seen some of the vids put out, too far away, too blurry, too dark, no hinge forensics, no step analysis, nothing ... just a distance shot and that's that ... hardly educational and possible to cover all defects with that style of film making. Mate, before you reckon people are playing at it .... check that your flys zipped up. /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I did the video thing today and I blew it by using the email size.
I'm not very good with my camera when it comes to videos.
