Steve have you and your other UK friends ever stopped to consider how detremental you guys are to this site are by bringing baggage over here from another site?

How about STFU.

what you harping on about now?

that was a perfectly reasonable statement. its silly to assume that just cos someone else gets the job over you that it was because their price was cheaper.....or to assume they are a hack or a lowballer if their price was cheaper.
i win a lot of jobs where my quote isnt the cheapest.....no doubt other companies drive by calling me a lowballer in their ignorance.

If you are insinuating that all the people from the uk on this forum are contributing for the sole purpose of continuing arguments from other sites then i dispair. How can someone who portrays themselves to be professional and activley involved in the promotion of this industry just turn around and make such a sweeping over generalisation. You tell me which is most detrimental to this site.

I don't advocate it, but back in TX or here in Germany, don't report "Harry" to the OHS, report them to whatever body collects sales tax. These types usually collect but don't pay.

its not always down to price you know.

Yep, and how a guy combs his hair if he has any can be a factor too. I think that the thread has gone adrift from the original important question; that in Ekka's land (in this case) the tree work industry is being invaded by aliens who commit unsafe work pracices under the patronage of the homeowner, the consequences real and imagined, and what if anything should be done about it. So, go have a beer and forget about it is one option I think basicly already mentioned....sounds good to me, especially when the people participating in the discussion get onry. /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I collect, and I pay. /forum/images/graemlins/aaa.gif

Life is too short to have shoddy book keeping.

I need to spend a lot more time now thinking about how to find GOOD customers, rather than just casting my net in waters where often I end up just wasting my time. Perhaps you can devise some strategy in this area.

Jay, aren't you in Japan? Are you suggesting that there's hacks there too?

The broadstream advertising such as yellow pages, local papers etc is a pretty wide cast net. If you are predominantly doing removals then you'll be competing against more hacks. I think other tree work gives you a better chance but it is also a lot more time consuming to bid on ... especially if the bids are free.

Today if I get a chance I'll take a couple of pics of prune bids that I spend an easy 45mins on answering the dumb questions and educating the client to only drive past and see a hack job ... you get sick of that too.

Hai, Nippon. Sadly so about the hacks here....not intentional though, they usually don't know any better. With the long downturn of the economy, more than a few low on work small construction companies with a crane have turned their attention to getting tree work. Their bids will always be lower than those of experienced tree people. One way or another they seem to get the job done, but just looking at the cuts, and the disorderliness of the site after they leave, it is easy to tell the lack of understanding. Give them credit for being able to build a good house I guess. I've seen them show up to do a tree job where nobody could get their saws started. /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif One guy was removing some pines near my shop. After walking over to observe the action, I took the liberty of suggesting that he might want to sharpen his Husquevarna. /forum/images/graemlins/9lame.gif Since he didn't know how, I took pity and did it for him. It is rather out of character for a country where manual trades people are generally so highly skilled. Ten years ago the money was good in tree work /forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif but not any more. They say that hal-as@ outfits come and go, but reliable work approach has longevity. Not wishing to cast a cloud, but more and more that saying seems to be in the realm of wishful thinking
