It took 5 months of ego deflation to post this, because my pride and ego did not what to hear the blather others ego saying "you would this..." or "you should have that..." Yes, I have ego, and it is not a lot of fun to post my mistakes. But I got lucky. It could have been a LOT worse and others should see just how easy it can happen.

I have climbed and cut one-handed for 14 years often thinking that it would never catch up to me. This time it did.

The truth is, we rarely get a glimpse of what one-handed cutting can really result in. So for educational purposes I decided to post to illustrate it.

I had actually shot the video for y'all, but mostly because of what otheres have shared on the buzz the most dangerous time, percentage wise, to have an accident is right after a first accident.

So, after I checked that I was not bleeding profusely, I shot a couple videos to calm myself down .

If possible, harnessing the pride would be apperciated, but I guess based off past posts, I can't really expect it from everyone.

I am putting my hard hat on as I hit the submit button....

Thank you Daniel, regardless of what they may say I have learned a lot from you and props to you for still being here making your videos on the way do tree work.

I can't watch it from my phone but thank you for posting it. Nobody is mistake free and sometimes a mistake is like wearing white after Labor Day, sometimes it's like invading Russia in Winter... I've invaded Russia a time or two myself.
Good onya.
I'll be sure to check it once I'm in front of a computer.

Glad that you're ok DanielSon....very sobering footage. I'm glad that it wasn't worse than it was. I don't even want to think about what could have happened, had that hit you a little more to the inside of your thigh.

Thanks for thinking enough of the rest of us, to put that out there for us to ponder. My hat's off to you!

Glad you're still in one piece DanielSon. Good on you for posting - I know I'll be seeing that image in my head @ work tommorow.

Probably wouldn't have made much of a difference but it's good for me to (occasionaly) appreciated MANDATED chainsaw protection up a tree! Hopefully I'll still think that on tuesday when it's going to be 38 degrees!

Get well soon.

Good that you're injury is relatively minor. Props for posting this.

Robinia, while the pants are hot they would've led to a much different video, shots of a jammed up saw, chewed up pants and the curse of having to drop another big chunk of change on a new pair.

Heal soon Danielson!

man i am sooo thanking god i bought a pair of pfanners. i was like holy crap $300 is pretty steep for these pants but after seeing this im like its well worth it. $300 prevention vs $3000 outcome, you decide which one you want. ill take the $300 anyday.

Glad you are ok and fully recovered. I have done the similiar thing, except I was on the ground. Mine was 38 stitches in 3 layers, fortunately it didn't grab a lot of muscle tissue though. If I did that today though with all the blood thinniers and crap I am on I would be in deep do-do. I was pruning a tree last week and managed to accumulate 4 to 6 minor scratches on my left forearm that appeared to be a serious lac. Sometimes it really sucks to get old.

I can't believe the mood you were in. The one time that I cut myself I was so ticked at myself I went on a rant for fifteen minutes. I got lucky too, ten stitches to the wrist from one handing the saw. You are a better man then I. I could not have filmed it. Glad your ok.Two hands when learning.....and all other times.

Hey Y'all,

Thanks for the encouraging words. Yeah.. It happened back in December so the wound is all healed now.

It never is very fun to post the mistakes, but the fact is that my arrogance in thinking " I'm better than the crowd's wisdom" is what caused it to happen.

Funny too... Because back in the beginning My first few posts on the Buzz were totally arrogant and self-focused. So much so that I had to request that Chisolm change my screen name from 1800TreeExpert to Danielson (which BTW is taken from the karate kid. meaning that he was learning).
I had posted this video of taking down a super rotten poplar that I had no business being in and I got put in my place for the ego.

It is weird to say this, but at that time I literally didn't understand the concept of a "community". I really didn't even know what it meant. It was all about Mark and that was all I knew.

Well, since then numerous things have forced my tenacious ego to simmer down a bit and I have been really lucky/blessed to start to grasp what community means.

All that is said to say that I appreciate y'all too. The fact is that right when I cut my leg, I started to panic. Then I closed my eyes and thought back to things I had read here and remembered that the most likely time to have an accident is right after one happened. So I took a few breaths, checked for bleeding and decided to take a video to burn some time and calm down.

Now if you stop and think about how powerful sharing these lessons really is for a second, you can see that it is highly likely, if not a mathematical certainty, that the wisdom and safety lessons shared here have likely saved csomeone's life, but probably multiple lives.

THAT is really a powerful thought.

So if anyone else has some ego getting in the way of posting something, I would encourage you to do it....

Even if your competition tried to use it against you on a bid, who really cares if it would save someones life? After all, its just some dumb money that will go away anyway.

My days of production are soon ending, but y'all know that I'll always have sap in my veins.

Thanks again for the comments.

The last one with your kids plucked a few heart strings for me. Real eye opener. Glad you're ok, because they depend on you, and I know I sure look forward to my 2 little guys at the end of the day. Stay safe everyone.

Regardless of our training, regardless of our preparations, as arborists, we're affected by luck daily. The trick is to minimize opportunities for Mr. Bad Luck.

Thanks for posting this, and I'm glad to see you're okay.
