You didn't actually use the word complacency, but it sounds like that was a factor. You knew you were in a bad position relative to the work, yet you let it go, cause you figured you'd be alright and could save a few seconds from repositioning.
Its hard not to get a bit complacent doing this work day after day, year after year, everything going smoothly. I think these little mishaps are God's way of reminding us to keep our guard up every move we make. Could end up saving your life, next time you think I shouldn't cut from this position, you're gonna move! And thanks to this thread SO WILL I !!!
No trip to the emergency room, no need to put your nose back where it came from, no blood all over the job.. You missed a couple days of work and spent some time with your family. That's a small price to pay for such a valuable lesson.. I call that Divine Order!
I also would second the thought that a humboldt with a high backcut, might have kept the piece from coming back, though maybe not if it rolled, as you mentioned.
