Vested interest

Today I was rooting around an Army surplus store ane came across a rack of various vests. The pockets came in a variety of configurations. some have attachment points to secure the pistol belt to the vest. Pretty cagey. The vests ran the gammit from fishing to full blown SWAT/assault style.

I wonder if anyone is using a vest to carry gear? It seems like in some circumstances it might be easier to have the gear available up front instead of dangling out back from the saddle.

Last summer when I was doing the climbing for the research project I wished that I had a vest for the samples and tools.

Happy Holidays!

I use a Stihl vest with a zipped pocket in front for cabling operations. Very confortable to keep a knife, some tape, etc.
Happy New Year to all of you,

I like to wear a vest during winter.
I use the waistcoat bt-515 from Fristads, www.fristads.se, attached image. Black may not always be the best color, but
they come in high-vis too.
What I like most is the lack of arms, it really helps
moving around, compared to wearing a jacket.
It's most suited between +10 deg and -10 deg celsius or so,
colder than that and I need a jacket on top.
It's got a lengthened back to help warm your bottoms, which
is nice.
I've aldo found that wearing some slings in the front pockets is very convenient. And of course the inner cellular
phone pocket is perfect for your 020 or 335!
Happy new year to you too!

Hillbilly,

That company, Fristads, makes some good looking work wear. There are few American companies that make functional synthetci work clothing that's affordable. Most of my more functional winter gear is from mountaineering. Fortunatley, I have some deal connctions so I can afford the clothing.

The vest sounds like a GREAT idea! Anyone know of a good, functional vest that isn't necessarily for winter wear? I'd be interested in something I could wear more than 1-2 months a year. Having pockets for extra straps/ biners/ pulleys/ etc. sounds real functional.

This is the vest that Ghivelder was referring to. I haven't tried the vest yet, but maybe. It does sound like an easy-access idea.

No, it wasn't what I meant. In fact I've just realized (looking on the dictionary) that it isn't a vest. It's similar to this one:

I just meant to say that the big pocket in front is confortable on cabling operations...

Tom , I know a fella who is looking for a Swat type of vest for doing some specialized work. Do you have a picture of that vest or do you know what company made them ? Also, what was the cost of the swat vest from the surplus store if you remember.

Thanks
Greg

For your info, at the u of washington forestry school in seattle, such vest are always referred to as GEEK VESTS.
