Right! So part of the problem is they’re planted in full sun without anything else around them- and often in not necessarily moist locations. That leads to the broad open form- structurally challenging.

Red maple * actually does fairly well here- Reach had it low on his list but of the large maples, that’s probably the most resilient here. Goosefoot maple is of course my actual first choice <3

I’d like to plant Black and Southern sugar maple, get a time machine and see how they both do around here. One or the other might be a really good bet.

*I mean red maple when it plants itself- not the root bound volcano mulch cultivars that line the streets of the gated communities. Those do not last long.
