Using a rope sling to protect a fence

A neighbor asked me to cut a 9-inch sweet gum about 45 feet tall near the fence in his yard. There was no clear space in his yard, but he had permission to drop the tree on the other side of the fence. Of course he didn't want to take the fence down or have it damaged.

I noticed two trees nearby on the other side of the fence had low limbs I could use to hold a rope sling to catch the tree trunk above the fence. After arranging the sling and getting a pull rope in the tree, I cut the tree just above the height of the top rail. The trunk caught in the sling as the top branches were hitting the ground. Cutting the trunk into pieces from the top down was easier with the trunk in the air, and the last piece was easy to tilt out of the sling without ever touching the fence.

I tried that with a branch once, between a v-cut high stump and a mini bucket tilted on end. Worked great until the second bounce, when the branch had flown off my v-cut. Did my drive of shame to Lowes for a new horizontal chainlink bar...

Your way sounds much better.

I love your wording “drive of shame”

but hate when I have to perform it

life in the fast lane
