Used rope splicing

I may be asking a dumb question, but better to ask then think I will never get it right.

Is used rope harder to splice then new rope? I have tried to splice my Samson Vortex on 2 different times. Once with fids, once with a Toss Wand, both epic failures. There just seems to be 10lbs of crap and only a 5lb bag to put it all in.

Here is the good news;

I am smart enough to cut the area off, and some extra to be sure.
That pesky long rope keeps getting shorter and shorter, pretty soon I will have another lanyard, lol.

Any help is appreciated
Thanks
Frank

Well I am glad it is not all me. I will have to try that. I also heard that in the old days they used to use talc to reduce the friction some.

I have never had any luck trying to splice a used rope. I have made several attempts to splice my Poison Ivy line and it just won't go. I picked up about 90 to 100 feet of Vortex and it was the easiest splicing I have done. When new, the cover seems to milk quite easily and once used, that cover won't milk or bunch as much which seems to make that core insertion near impossible. I was advised to use a 44544 taper on the core which worked really well.

Try washing your rope in a front loader using a rope wash bag and compatible detergent.

I'd also add some free & clear fabric softener. This helps lubricate the strands a bit.

Splicing used rope is always harder than new, so patience, patience & patience are the first three steps.

Nick if that question is for me.....just the 2 failures, but I did stayed at a Holiday Inn Express so I figured I could do it. Only use old guys will remember commercial.

Frank set the used rope aside for now. You're battling the lack of technique AND the used rope.

The advice given in this thread is great and will make a tough situation less tough, but not easy.

I say focus on nailing down the motions, then when you have it down pat, hit that used rope and show it who's boss!

Buy some 7/16" sta-set. It'll just be a few dollars for maybe 15 feet and that will allow you to practice the splice 5-10 times. It's a forgiving rope to learn on.

I will look into getting some Nick. I did try a 3rd splice but on the other end. It did go better for a while. Making my first eyes tight may not be the best starting oint either. As I mentioned it went better until I got something twisted and then it well to hell. At least by the time I figure this out my Enforcer should be here so at least I can do some testing on them.

if you are looking for practice rope call knot and rope supply, and get some of their double braid. its super easy. great way to learn and it exemplifies the behavior of a double braid rope. way easier to see how it works.
and its even cheaper than sat-set. plus you can make dock lines or what ever,
