Usable life of climbing helmets

I have a hi vis kask manufactured in 2013 that had no hits on it. But you definitely hear cracking when squeezed. Oh and it has been mostly sitting in the shop for the last 3 years since I have my protos (was my daily helmet before)

So just going straight on the 10 year life isn't smart either

Very true of all gear. Daily inspections and using good discretion will go a long way. I had to dust off my old Petzl Ecron Roc helmet from 2006 a week ago out of necessity. Gave it the old squeeze test and was satisfied. Still wouldn't put it into daily use though.

Where do you see the date on the Protos? I looked today and couldn't find it.

They go off the date of sale, not manufacture. That means you look at the date on your receipt. I don't see anywhere on the helmet that has a date of manufacture but I may be missing it.

so if it has a 12 month shelf life how do you determine the shelf life if there is no record of manufacture date?

There's some markings inside mine.
Inside towards the front there's a circle with numbers on it. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, 3rd quarter of 2013? Also another circle w letters A through M around it... no idea really.
There's also a serial number on the bottom of the brim, Pfanner can probably tell me production date from that.
