Does not tend well from below like a HC pulley does.
Highly recommend yoyomans drum for added control and reduced wear.
Very nice device, I used it everyday until....Rope Runner. Still use it everday but as a backup device on my harness (RR is still experimental) or on my second tie in point when I am working a "V" for positioning.
Super efficient: very low friction in the advance, virtually no sitback
Precise, reliable control: when set away from your body for limbwalking, you get positive control of your balance and motion without any “slop” in the positioning
Ascending and Descending in one device: it has the zero sitback efficiency of a cammed ascender but you can descend on it.
SRT or DDRT, same device
Midline attachable
Multiple rope sizes
Small vertical height from top of prussic to bottom of device
Unlike a cordage prussic, it doesn’t need to be “tied, dressed and set.” Once threaded and dressed, it stays “set” by virtue of its design. This can be crucially important for a rope grab that will operate at a distance from you, such as a static anchor.
CONS
It’s expensive
It wears out and needs to be rebuilt
It looks alien
It doesn’t support multiple connections easily
There is no reasonable way to re-direct the pulling/tending vector except straight down from the device Ie: toward your body
In tight, crowded, intrusive climbing conditions, the paddles sticking out don’t give you a feeling of confidence
Here it is in a “climbing in a loop” ddrt system:
I like it a lot. But I also keep a Hitchclimber system.
