Unicender with drum installed

An old thread, but I recently got a unicender myself and thought I'd share my tending/rope keeper that I made. I've quoted you Stephen because this design seems to accept wraps either direction. I'll be giving it a climb tomorrow to test for sure, so far it has passed the test just hanging in the shop with no body weight on it. I have found that you can tend slack to the left and the right but tending straight ahead on the bearings works the best, very comparable to tending the roperunner. Love the safety lock aspect.

For the carabiner connections this is great.

Does anyone stil use the girth hitch connection? Some earlier discussions had the girth hitch deflect the L bar down a bit further (make it more grippy on the rope?)

Sadly, this it is the second RE produced Unicender. Morgan had several earlier versions so, in reality, a mark111 has come and gone. I'm not holding my breath that any changes are in the works. But you never know.
I know this comment is a year and a half old, but seeing it as the thread was resurrected...

R.E. had a prototype of a new Unicender at TCIA in November 2019. I think they said hopeful for release within next year (?), but after hearing that multiple times with the Akimbo, I won't hold my breath. Hopefully since this isn't entirely new, it will come more quickly.

No drum...

Did you see it?

Anything noteworthy of the design?

It would be interesting to see a version made out of stainless steel (or SS wear points) to help extend the useful life of the product.

I gave an old Uni, made by Morgan, to a friend of mine. When it no longer held his weight, he sent it back to Morgan, who capped the cams with SS. It was usable for years after that. Big improvement.

I did see it, and played with it for a few seconds. Didn't look too long, so don't want to misrepresent what I saw with incorrect memory. But I know at least the most wearable parts were SS. They also removed at least 1 of the friction pieces (or whatever they are called). I vaguely remember the roller, but wouldn't have committed that to a post if not for the pic above. It did slide up even better than the one I have now (would have called it the original RE version, but I think it is too new for that - 2 or 3 years old).

I did leave thinking "I'll buy that when it comes out"

I had one with ss inserts but gave it away once a got a bdb. uni is the most underrated and underappreciated. why the drum though? I always used the barrel which was also designed by M.T. as far as i know. who wants to wrap the rope around every time when you can use the drum?

just saw that pic earlier on my phone. Looking a computer screen now. I don't remember the bottom swivel when I looked at it, but that would be sweet!

I've given this a few climbs now and wanted to give an update. Taking the wraps to the left does work well, although I find myself instinctively wrapping to the right as it was originally designed but I've purposely gone left several times to test it. Tending has been great with the bearings and the rope no longer able to sneak out of the device.

The one issue I had was occasionally the carabiner would rotate and the captive bar would slide down the spine while the unicender was still in the corner of the carabiner causing a bind. This was remedied by switching to this carabiner with a spring loaded corner trap. https://www.treestuff.com/climbing-technology-hms-concept-tgl/
