Unicender rebuild

Has anyone gotten this done? How quick is the service?
I think it's getting to that time for mine. I've calculated I clocked between 500 and 700 hours of climbing on it, all srt. I am dreading losing the uni for any prolonged amount of time, it's really changed my way of climbing.

Had mine done. Came back fast. I think Morgan estimates two days plus shipping time.

I tried to calculate the hours and determined I do not have a clue. I am gessing nowhere close to 700. Apparently I cause higher friction then most 'cause everything I use in that function starts smoking and dies.

Evidently, I am a friction device's worst nightmare.

How in the world did you get so many hours on yours? What type of rope do you use? Do you weigh more than 50 lbs?

Work with me....I'm searching for answers here.

Dave

I don't know how I put that many hours on it. I used exclusively tachyon and I weigh 150 pounds. The calculation I made is based on counting all thed days I worked since I bought it and calculated I climbed on average four hours a day, which I think is pretty conservative.

700!! I estimated 120-150 for mine.
Morgan is trying out a hard coating for the clutches.
I send mine from the UK, Morgan is always quick but I know what you mean Treeweaver, I hate climbing any other system now. I'll have to get a second Uni!

I've thought that carbon steel along the beveled edges would be the trick. But, the R&D would be insane. So, would the costs.

Maybe I'm messing up my calculation here, but don't know how I would. I've had it for 10 months now and as I said I'm pretty sure I average about four hours of climbing a day.

Here are some ideas I am trying in order to reduce excessive wear on the Uni in long, fast repel situations.

Dave. I like your suggestions of saving on wear for the Uniscender. In this first photo, could you just use a munter hitch on the biner and eliminate the figure 8?

It will depend on your weight and rope. You need smooth light friction, the munter for me is to much. Also I do not like the rope on rope friction in combination with speed.

the fate system and the unicender get married! The kong robot is a good tool for this app.
120 hours of climbing isnt much is it? 10-20 hours per week. so every 6 to 12 weeks? that is a little worse than the rate I burn up beeline. 700 hours is quite impressive.

Yes, indeed, you get the credit for the idea on this.

As far as wear goes, it is best not to take me as an example. Everyone else I have talked with gets more hours than I do...regardless of WHAT I use.

Diagnosing my wear issues, I believe the largest contributor is not the working process but the dropping out of the tree like a stone. I don't like the slow spinning dangle of a caterpillar...I like to drop and hit the next tree. Thus, the reason for the increased friction devices without having to change over to an entirely different system.

Even without this additional friction, I was able to go through a full working season before needing a rebuild. But you have to understand, we have a short season here and I definitely don't climb as many hours as some of you younger fellows.

A word of caution, when you add friction above the Unicender, experiment as it needs to be "light" friction. Too much and the Unicender will not grab consistently!

Thanks for the pictures Dave.
I was thinking of doing something like in your first picture with my petzl piranha but never got round to it.
I really enjoy the compactness of the unicender and climbing srt with very little gear but maybe I should start experimenting more again. Do you use the figure 8 only coming down at the end of a climb or do you use it more often than that.

The piranha should work fine and if I can figure out where I put mine, I will try it also.

Only use this on long fast descents to reduce wear that this activity causes. The attachments disrupt the upward movement simplicity while working the tree.
