Trip to England.

Near Kew across the river is Syon Park, a more formal garden with a good variety. Richmond Park is nearby, huge, public, lots of cool old veterans in a deep dark forest. It's a good area to see by bicycle.

Thanks again everybody for the tips, it's a little late but I'm going to try to post some pics from the trip. So many cool trees at Kew, including my first ever Sequoia sempervirens. Also the fattest tree I've ever seen, a Castanea sativa and some nasty looking plane trees in York.10369748_10204197364083215_7305513309595188661_n.webp 1477521_10204197264440724_933204995784014562_n.webp 1487804_10204197272080915_4233361323962236127_o.webp

I got a quick driving tour of Richmond park, awesome place. I could spend a day riding a bike around there, and we saw a whole bunch of deer with the big antlers and whatnot. I only had fish and chips once but in York I discovered STEAK PASTIES. little pastries filled with steak and potato all hot and ready to go. Truly amazing. Lots of good cider, I finally had a "proper" cider. I would highly recommend the neolithic sites at Avebury as an alternative to stonehenge, they even have a remarkably cool gift shop. All in all a great trip, driving in Ireland was a blast. I would go back just to drive around the countryside.

Thanks for posting all that, Mr. B. Looks like the pollarding keeps folks busy there!

I'm happy to share! Glad you like the pics. It was really cool to see well maintained pollarding but there was a lot of crappy topping too. From what I could tell from a London bus tour, every plane tree in the city looks like it was topped and then managed back into a normal looking tree. Everything over there seems to sing to the tune of "heavy management", not like the relative free for all we enjoy in the states. TreeLogic, I named that one tree "muffin top". It's an ash and I wasn't really able to tell what was going on there, I don't know if ash trees are popular for grafting but now that you say that it seems fitting. In the background is the massive Holm Oak, an original cross of turkey oak and english oak. If I haven't got those stats correct I'm pretty close at least.

And I thought I was having a grand time living in Newport RI with all the grand old trees there! Do miss my travels to England back in the 1990s.
