TRIP REPORT

This last weekend I had the honor of a weekend trip recreational tree climbing with JERRY BERANEK, and my personal friend Mike M.
Man what a trip, Jerry took us just outside Fort Bragg to a big 'ol spruce growing down in a ravine.
The first limb was at 100+'. I used my Kong double handled ascenders, Jerry loaned me a CMI rope grab as a backup attached to my saddle. I have used the Kongs for awhile now but this was the first real long ascent with them.
I really dont like them now. The handles are way too small and I cannot switch my grip from a pull up to a chin up. Gotta switch to a different type.
well anyway climbing up that first pitch was a blast, Jerry was taking movies the whole time.
I gotta say I am now a confirmed rec. tree climber. Thanks to New Tribe, and all my tree friends who encouraged me.

The View is great! well I could see the ocean by about 4 inches.
I could also view the moss on the limbs. It seemed to be different at every stage of the climb. Jerry seemed to know the names of the lichen/moss/ferns in the tree but the latin names just passed right over me.
At the top of this grand 'ol spruce is a broken top. In the top is a whole nuther spruce growing out of the duff! The roots looked a little girdled. What I would from a tree growing out of the top of a trunk...
Oh and a Olympia beer can near the top. I almost pulled it off and tucked it into my saddle bag but then thought "hey maybe it's there for a reason. Sure enough Jerry said his friend put it up there some years ago and it is now a spider habitat.

Frans and Mike make number 15 and 16 to climb the spruce. And their climb marked my 11th time in it. Great tree to have in your back yard. 12 ft dia by 237 ft tall. I'm going to try to post an image of it. Luck
