Tribe TreeBuzz

Internet forums would be much less prone to these problems if everybody that wanted to post was required to make their name and contact info public to the forum. The hubris would be less pervasive, that's for sure. Anonymity allows people to treat others in a way they might not otherwise.

I was typing this in a thread the other day and as I was about to post the whole thread was deleted by admin. Anonymity allows users to be much more bold in what they say. When a person posts their identity all that they say is now a reflection of their character. Therefore like myself I will read and reread everything making sure that when I post I am completely sure I want this to go on my personal record due to the fact that it reflects who I am as a person. That's just me and my opinion, I am very outspoken and have never once been called a coward. I will sign everything I say and live with the consequences, this helps me to try and think before I speak. Thank god I stopped drinking alcohol 7 years ago, I now apolizise less for unthought of bursts of speech. Just my humble 2 cents. Paul.

Sometimes, in order for us to grow and flourish, some of our baggage truly needs to be buried. I'm all for the relative anonymity afforded here and the freedom to open up to those I grow to trust.

Not surprisingly then, I view the buzz very much like a huge family interacting, tearing into and rallying around each other in ways that defy sense.

Some of the siblings are wont to tweak another, some get a splinter in thier jockey's and take it out on everyone else and sometimes there are knock-down-drag-outs. We know whom we can trust and from whom to stay clear.

And, at some level, even when we truly dislike a member of the tribe, we still feel a kinship and concern for them when they disappear, are hurting or are even just beign themselves.

This is how most families work I suppose.

Sometimes there are members of the family that cross the line regularly but pose no real threat to family harmony so they are tolerated while others simply go beyond the pale and need to be sent away to be on their own, often to that person's great success.

And just like a family, while some decisions may be given consideration for consensus, some are just handled by the progenitors, often to the cries of, "not fair!" from the progeny.

A heavy hand is sometimes necessary but never should be frequent and certainly not wielded flagrantly or publicly. (
as is the case at Another Site)

I'm pretty sure that Mark and Tom have hit a good balance here and have acheived a decent level of that all elusive self-policing necessary to keep this tribe flourishing.

Wow, this is a really great and thoughtful post. My thoughts about anonynimity were not necessarily what I feel is right, just an observation. I understand the need/desire/place for anonymity. Once again, great post, thanks for elucidating what many of us were probably thinking, or at least trying to understand.

Thanks, I love a timely slow clap.

Is TreeBuzz more like a community than a tribe?

Tribes have a social code which is enforced, even though it may be evolving over time. Survival of the fittest.

I think of TreeBuzz as a community of very different types of people with one big thing in common. We are tree people. For myself, I enjoy the diversity. Some posts are hugely enlightening or intriguing. Others are stupid but become entertaining with time. Some just remain stupid.

But I do value this community and all that goes on in it. This is an important place.

Less, rather than more sensorship

"Less, rather than more sensorship"

What senses don't you want? I think that sight, hearing and a little touching are all that we can provide...for now.

Oh...maybe you mean censorship?! if that's the case, none here at all. Censorship comes from the government. Since Mark and I are sorta benevolent dictators we only edit :)

Yeah...censorship. I type really badly in the dark after several beers. Being a drunken TreeBuzzer and all.

My goal is that my posts become more stupid over time…due to my special FlameBoy powers!

And quit touching me!

All,
Throughout my time spent here on the buzz I have interacted with many who as time went on I have found to my surprise that more than the majority turned out to be knowledgeable and professional. Great posts, informative, interesting, and even funny. You guys have really changed the general publics view of an industry that has for a long time been viewed as having many un-educated hacks, has-beens, and unfortunately drunks. I developed a high level of respect and admiration for this, in fact came to expect it, and proud to be part of it. Many of you have displayed great qualities as people, professionals, TREE people, ARBORISTS.I have not been let down until recently. Many have called themselves drunks or stated they were inebriated while writing, and although I am sure this has been more in jest than truth I fear these comments could hurt the tribe more as a whole than any individual would want. This site has stood above others and through self policing has not been a bashing ground. I guess I am saying we should refrane from the use of drunk comments and prevent misrepresentation to the newbies and the general public, So many of you have greatly contributed to elevating the title of 'Arborist' to one that is synonymous with 'professional' lets not loose any of the ground gained.

I hope I have purveyed this in a fashion that it will be recieved well and not percieved as disrespectful in any way.
