Treevet's big bald faced hornet adventure

Bee nests are a hazard for my crew. The new guy is major allergic and has to carry 2 epipens (spelling?) in his lunch bag. When we spot one I tell him to stay back until it's "taken care of".

When I landscaped I worked with a kid that had to carry one and he didnt like working with me cause I was always saying I wanted to stab him with his epipen so bad
Hahahahaha! I have a manager that is allergic and carried two at all times. Every time he meets up with me he tells me where they are located. One day, he was like " You do know how to administer an epipen right!?" I looked at him like he was stupid and said "Yeah, side of the neck"........It's been a while since I've seen him?!

The $600 price tag is what they ask from the insurance companies. What they get is less after negotiations. It still is a crock of shit. It's so much easier to steal with a pen than a gun.

Tuesday we I was limbing up an 10" oak while spiking and didn't even see the nest. It hit the ground and the bees started shooting up toward me but I guess the didn't see me since I was on the other side of the tree. I burned down and ran. Hit the nest with bee killer and bailed on the jobsite for a couple hours to do some stumps in the area. Miraculously no one got stung.

I got stung on the eye lid while trying to use poison spray on a huge nest of wasps. I then switched to chlorinated brake cleaner. That stuff will melt their wings off before they can get to you. As you spray them they will fall out of the air. The revenge felt great, my eye was unbearable.

Tat is a wake up call...

I got stung in the bucket a few years back.. My face was only 18" from the nest and I never saw it.. then came dwn and couldn;t find it from the ground for a good while even though I knew where it had to be... It's one of those wild cards that you look for but can't always see and can be quite dangerous as the above story is a HUGE eye opener!!!!

Thanks,

With Hornets/Wasps there isnt much can do to appease them - I like the Brake Cleaner trick although not sure of its effects on ropes - but with bees I just talk to them friendly like and they dont seem to bother me.... I have cut through hives and had 50-100 bees hovering 2 feet in front of my face and they havent attacked - I just talk to them like they are old friends and apologies whilst I am at it - seems to work...
