BUT this is a CLOSE tree to call - I may have to go back and see the flowers are there as a few left and check the bark and wait for the acorns in the late summer. MAYBE I can measure it

These two species are closely related. Q. prinus prefers rocky acidic soils and Q. michauxii likes the wetlands.
Is this tree near a boggy(or once was boggy) area?
I think the acorns of these two species may be the best for correct ID. The acorns are dark brown/black in Chestnut oaks with warty acorn cups covering about 1/2 of the nut.
Whereas the Swamp Chestnut Oak (Q. michauxii) has a tan-colored acorn and its cup is shorter covering only the lower 1/4 of the nut.
Your photo shows a short/small acorn cup so this may very well be the Q. michauxii....very hard to say...
