Trees from a distance

I go with Robinia as well.

As for Xman's question about manzanita in Zone 6 - only the low growing species A. uva-ursi would work but that species doesn't have the pretty bark.
Or you can always try one in a protected area and cover it through the winter.

The locust guess was a good one, just based on the structure of the tree.

Here is another clue: Since this tree has been beat up by the school district, it is not showing its true shape. This tree tends to have a rounded canopy, not the canopy it is currently showing (much like a locust).

Gets real nice fall color

Sooooo......since the tree is planted next to a school what about a common tree planted next to such institutions in Asia..........the 'Chinese Scholar Tree'
aka: Sophora japonica or also known as the Pagoda Tree ?

AAAGH! Diane! I was just going to guess that, and when I refreshed the page, you already did! I hope you're right so I can say I would have been right LOL!

PS - Actually, the Latin has been changed to Styphnolobium japonicum, so there!
