Trees from a distance

if @SomethingWitty doesn't have it with Slash pine, I'll throw out Shortleaf pine - Pinus echinata

And that oak has been a bastard to figure, so I'll go with Quercus austrina

@ATH is really close on the pine. To be honest, I cannot yet reliably identify this one from a shortleaf, so this is a "habitat" identification for me.

You guessed the oak correct. To me, it does tend to be more bendy and irregular than the swamp chestnut oak. You're up unless folks want to stay on the pine.

Not gonna find one here in Ohio. I'm going back 20 years to when I had southern pines in dendro! That is just what I thought of when "looks like Shortleaf".
Naw, man. A tree. It's been weeks since we got a fresh one.
Please don't post a pine. They just look like pines.

It is definitely impressive to remember that sort of tree trivia for two decades. I guess it's okay to find out if you're right. Lol

Hard to distinguish from Shortleaf has to be Pitch pine...right?

It's not pitch pine. Might be better to switch to Latin names. I almost wonder if shortleaf used to be the same species. I don't have a deep time background in dendro... I'll give you the genus if you need a hint. ;)
