Trees from a distance

The shrubby tree behind my small bear.
 
This tree is in the rosaceae family. The wood is exceptionally hard and strong. It was used extensively by native tribes in the cascades to make tools such as arrow heads, and cooking tools.
 
Yes, hedge or field maple. Cheaper than the 8' privacy fence City Council wanted to build. Might try a few specimens in the parks and see how they look groomed. Coarse, but real pretty up close. Haven't seen any others in the region, although Loma Vista says they grow them. These came bareroot from Lawyer.
