No, but there are beech nearby as well, which confused me for a bit, but I ascertained the species after a bit of closer investigation. The clue is obvious once you see it.

Correct! The clue was the dead tips dying from the chestnut blight. All of the chestnuts in the woods around here (Harvard, MA) are small dead trees with new shoots from the base. A sad state of affairs.C. dentata
