Trees from a distance

Yep, you got it. Thuja plicata--Western Red Cedar, an "arborvitae" and the only other member of the genus native to North America besudes the Eastern White Cedar ("Arborvitae").

I thought I'd post this one because somebody (not me) had pruned them this way for a long time. I thought it showed a feature of its branching habit that other arborists and landscapers might take advantage of, namely, its capacity to form a dense hedgerow wall. This kind of training has to begin early, obviously, but produces a lush surface with numerous ramifications.
 
This one is a bee-otch. I'll give clues as needed.

Looks like a pear to me...but something's telling me it's a beech. I'm going to say Fagus...

Bob, I hear ya on the driveway. Not to mention the powerlines above it...
 
Thanks for that Pigwot. The leaves are so pearlike....its bizarre.

Thought I'd keep this going with one from Pike Place Market in Seattle: a piece of sculpture with a leaf impression. Name the exact species....(easy one)
