treeMotion Wear-n-Tear

Mark B, we all appreciate your attempts to contribute to the discussion. It really is a matter of PR. I have had some dealings with companies pre and post internet forums. Eddie Bauer as an example replaced a day old jacket that I damaged because they couldn't repair it without altering the style of the jacket. NO CHARGE. That jacket lasted 17 yrs before I gave it to my brother who then wore it for contracting work another 5 yrs. They demonstrated an exemplary level of customer care that I have never forgotten. On the other hand I've had companies with claims of superior products take a less then superior approach to their customer service when the product failed from defect. Guess who I continued to do business with?

In the age of the internet, while it would be nice to have people air their grievances privately instead of on public forums, it is naive to think they won't. Deal effectively with whatever medium is used. A positive experience with a product or service would spread to about 12 other people while a bad experience would, on average, reach 67 people(none btw being the producers of the product). That was before the 'net, imagine those numbers multiplied exponentially.

This is a new product that is going thru it's initial market trials. With many "fast followers" it would seem that it's position in the marketplace will be influenced by how you the manufacturers handle these growing pains. Promptly and with clear resolution for the concerned owners or slowly playing a game of cat and mouse?

May I suggest an email or letter to owners of the TM indicating that a concern about wear and tear has come to your attention and you would like to know if they have experienced the same? A proactive approach could make a huge difference in how the consumers view the company and the product.

On another point, was the issue of shorter life cycle of your product due to the enhanced performance design ever mentioned to prospective buyers or even afterwards to owners?

That would have been great information to know before hand. I am seeing a little wear but not badfor having owned my TM for 6 months now. I wanted it to last a few years at least but hopefully I will not have to retire the TM before her time.

Time will tell....In the meantime I am praying these "replacement parts" don't cost as much as the TM suspenders do. I believe its $135.... yeowch

This really calls for the company to step up and take care of all those early adopters that have problems with excessive wear. To me, it speaks volumes. If they don't or need such pressure to take care of this issue it'll make me think twice about a purchase.

Hello Buzzers, US tm distributor here,

SherrillTree is aware of a limited number of treemotion suspension straps displaying signs of early wear. In several cases we consider the wear to be premature to what I consider "reasonable" life of the product. The first instance was among customer/friends known to climb very aggressively srt very long distances and while hauling significant loads in addition to their own body weight. The action of heavy jugging resulted in the quickest abrasion witnessed yet (visible fraying within 5-months).

I recently spoke with the manufacture's representative (Teufelberger of Austria) again about a resolution to the problem and was assured that, barring unforeseen circumstances, mobile repair kits will be shipped to SherrillTree mid January '09. Knowing the reasonableness and generosity of this manufacturer (the parent company to New England Rope), I feel certain that they will make the field repair kit available at minimal to no cost to owners of treemotion under 1-year.

If not, SherrillTree will.

Let me add that from personal experience, both using and having spoken directly with owner/climbers, that this saddle is truly revolutionary in comfort, ergonomics and function, and without a doubt remains "the most" appreciated saddle that I've heard climber's boast about. That fact alone is the reason that the Petzl Sequoia and Buckingham's Ergovation maintain very close resemblance to the unique suspension of treemotion.

If you have a treemotion experiencing excessive wear to the strap that supports the suspension ring hardware (as in imagery accompanying this discussion), please email a jpeg photo to info@sherrilltree.com and I will see to it that your issue receives formal review.

cheers all,

Tobe

Thanks for stepping into the void Tobe. Good to hear someone willing to take this issue seriously and look after those that made the investment in the product.

FT allowed me to climb with his TM which was quite comfortable with some exceptions that I'm sure would've been solved with adjustment. I didn't want to put him through the process of readjusting. My Glide is coming up to it's third year anniversary and thoughts are arising about the addition of a new saddle. TM, TF, Sequoia, Ergovation? hmmmmmmmmmm......

what a great saddle to wear. That being said....I worked that saddle 30 35 hrs aweek for 3months and found glazing on the leg attachments, buckles very worn looking, chainsaw attachments worn and cracked. went thru 3 bridges in that time frame. NEVER had a saddle in 15years that fell apart so soon. Seems to be a durability issue. Working in cold clims as well it does feel great with extra clothes on, best ever actualy! But it wears out or looks worn out. Thats enough for me. I also backed up the bridge and threaded some black widow thru the bridge. wind chill warning in winnipeg today, minus 42 celcius, thats why my kids let me on the computer, brrrrr. climb on! Will download a pic later when kids get home for lunch, bit above my head.

LOL, It is a bit colder than that here in Sask. Great post on the TM saddle issue. Most of the guys here don't have to worry about the adjustability issues that we do with the winter climate! I just spoke to a buddy in Florida, he was freezing his butt off @ 50F.

So who the heck are you anyway?

if you read the fine print in the treemotion saddle, it says that the saddle is not to be worn and used for more than 6 months. It is only designed for short use. I don't know why they did this, I am sure it will change, but it wears and tears quickly because it was built with a short life span in mind.

The climbing plates of the Ergovation will fit most carabieners that are approved for tree climbing as well as a variety of snap's for those preferring a snap on the end of their lanyard.

I think you'd better read that fine print again. Do you honestly believe that the Treemotion was designed with a six-month planned obsolescence?!

"Do you honestly believe that the Treemotion was designed with a six-month planned obsolescence?! "

could be a hidden marketing feature, to keep selling parts.

Hey, I am a college student that knows more people in the business than you do tlhamel. From professors and other people, I have been told and showed the wear and tear problems on this saddle. It is a nice saddle, great for work, just designed for lightweight and max performance.

WOW! He really got you with that one Taylor! Dan, just how many people in the business do you know? I know at least a couple, so that must make me an expert as well!
