A friend of mine worked at the Crazy Horse Monument in South Dakota as a rock blaster. Their ropes were full of rock dust and would abrade their eights terribly fast. I saw several of his retired eights that had probably 10% of the diameter worn away. When I described that to Denny Moorehouse of ISC he felt that there would still be plenty of strength left and the friction characeristics wouldn't have been compromised very much. But...without testing it's all just conjecture.
