Erik, that article about the bot-herders should scare the pants off you if you're using Windows, especially if it's sitting on an always-on connection to the Internet. I don't know much (good) about Vista but at least up until it one had a 50/50 chance of getting their new Windows computer commandeered within 11 minutes of plugging it into the Internet. Vista may be somewhat better (for the time being, anyway) but the amount of control it wrests from its "owner", and the demands it places on the hardware, are astounding.
Mario, I've attached a text file for you to wade through. It's a log of this page being fetched, along with every element necessary for displaying it. The (then, and that after being filtered through a local proxy to alter the content somewhat) 90 KB of HTML text took 9 seconds to arrive; the remaining 850 or so KB of data took an additional 2 seconds, having been available from my web cache on the computer with the modem. The program, "wget," also optionally modifies a copy of the HTML document to reference the local additional files it fetched.
"Squid" (I referred to it either above or in the other thread) would be beneficial to any Internet connection, especially so if more than one computer is accessing the Internet via a common point. It's also beneficial to a website such as this, to be used as the initial point of contact to relieve some of the burden on the webserver/database.
