TreeBuzz slow...

Erik, that article about the bot-herders should scare the pants off you if you're using Windows, especially if it's sitting on an always-on connection to the Internet. I don't know much (good) about Vista but at least up until it one had a 50/50 chance of getting their new Windows computer commandeered within 11 minutes of plugging it into the Internet. Vista may be somewhat better (for the time being, anyway) but the amount of control it wrests from its "owner", and the demands it places on the hardware, are astounding.

Mario, I've attached a text file for you to wade through. It's a log of this page being fetched, along with every element necessary for displaying it. The (then, and that after being filtered through a local proxy to alter the content somewhat) 90 KB of HTML text took 9 seconds to arrive; the remaining 850 or so KB of data took an additional 2 seconds, having been available from my web cache on the computer with the modem. The program, "wget," also optionally modifies a copy of the HTML document to reference the local additional files it fetched.

"Squid" (I referred to it either above or in the other thread) would be beneficial to any Internet connection, especially so if more than one computer is accessing the Internet via a common point. It's also beneficial to a website such as this, to be used as the initial point of contact to relieve some of the burden on the webserver/database.

i couldn't connect to tree buzz yesterday, Saturday the 3rd. Kept saying all these error messages that I've never seen on my computer before.

maybe Mark had to errase the stuff about the crash, cause maybe there is someone doing it and they'd like to read about how they affected people. just a guess. errase these if you want to...

It is running medium speed this morning but the whole site is acting funny. The apostrophe key is opening a search window for some reason from here.

Back to normal speed. It maybe faster! Thanks!

I still find it hot and cold.

Same here from Atlanta. It's hot at the moment.

I am one of the unfortunate few still on dialup, DSL is still to pricey over here for me to justify it!
As soon as I joined this site I noticed how slow it was, and to be honest it determines how often I come to visit! AS is very much faster and if I only have a few minutes to squeeze in to browse I'll go there.
I would love to visit here more often but the wait time is offputting.
If the solution is as simple as avatar size, then please work on it...see you soon.

Haven't heard from you yet, Mark. They probably can devote more time to serving your needs than I can at the moment, but I have a few logistical ideas that would improve things greatly. Maybe we can work together to implement them or maybe my level of attention would be more than sufficient anyway.
