sorry can't seem to link the imgur video, but it is a tractor mounted hydraulic gripper that pulls about a 16" stump up, roots and all.

Wow, interesting. I notice our local power company doesn't pull old poles out of the ground. They set up a jacking system and push them up out of the ground.

Yes the video showed a large hydraulic jack like an upright log splitter, with hydraulic pincers at ground level. That was mounted to a sort of open box shaped frame with feet like a crane outrigger, He backed up to the stump clamped the pincers and pulled it out in a few seconds.

Oh, I can see that and see it working. Orchards would love that tool. Now just where to put the dozens or hundreds of stumps.

In our childhood apple orchard we would only have one stump at a time. My Dad would hand auger below them and blow them out with dynamite. (The only thing that could win out over watch The Wide World of Disney on a Sunday evening.)

The thing I found interesting is the inward pivoting blades that cut off most of the root mass, once the stump (and the apparatus)was able to be lifted with the arms. I had to watch it a couple times to get my head around that.

How about "arms" ? They come into play after stump is up out of ground on initial push up. Arms come in, more visible on left side than right, then pushed up higher stripping off much of the dirt. Had to watch it a number of times to figure out what was happening.

Looks like two hydraulic outriggers pushing down below grade by the force of the tree being uprooted, with soil falling off, and roots "folding" together.
