Tree Gear on Amazon

Did a google to find the open-able Petzl ring and found multiple knockoffs with names I didn't recognise. All had graphics indicating CE EN approval - though we know how much that can mean in certain markets.

Amazon served up related:

I thought Sherrill had a choke hold on these. Odd thing was there were small optimizations like integrating the pull back strap's latch to the archery trigger structure as one piece. Looked cheap however.

I did see some items from the Petzl store.

Prices have definitely gone up and stayed up.

Anyone know if it's still the wild west in regard to knockoff brands or are there now real players? The rollgliss inspired drill powered ascender is an example of gaining credibility possibly with real standards testing occurring.

edit - this one actually uses the name "hitchclimber"!

I generally won't buy any tree gear on Amazon for two reasons, I'd rather support our own industry sellers (Wesspur, Arbsession, etc) and counterfeits certainly are a possibility. I'm sure if you browsed directly to the Petzl or whoever's 'Amazon store' so you know you are getting a real product from the legit manufacturer that should be fine as far as the counterfeit angle is concerned. As far as knock-off bigshots, and other non-life support items, sure, could be worth a roll of the dice if the price is low enough, but you usually get what you pay for.

Couple years ago I ordered some Pferd Chisel files from Amazon.
They are not Pferd. Have the logo but they are junk. The angles are all wrong. Couldn’t figure it out at first , thought I forgot how to file a chisel chain , nothing matched up.
Junk.

I wonder if Sherrill, DMM etc turn a blind eye to this or maybe it's like sticking your finger in a dam - just overwhelming to police.

There’s some decent camp knock off knee ascenders that actually work fairly well couple of guys I work with have ran them for a few years now without complaint.

It's not the old days when Sherrill could police it's U.S. patents in the U.S. In patent and intellectual property (IP) wars you have to be willing to spend the money on lawyers to win. Going up against international knock-offs in the age of Amazon mail order is throwing away money whack-a-mole style for patent holders like SherrillTree, DMM and Petzl.

Amazon is enabling all this. Another reason to stay away from them if you can.

Good news is IP is enforceable at "normal" arb retailers, yet another reason to shop at Wesspur, Arbsession, etc etc etc
