Traverse line

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w33MHhIjutw

This was a blast. I always hated climbing this pecan tree. It just felt punky and had no good tie in points. THe canopy spread over the house and a ceramic tile BBQ ....also some service lines...plants etc.
It finaly died and sat dead for a while. I never in my wildest dreams thought I could use a single 80 foot pine that was 150 feet away to set a traverse line but geuss what...it happened. I learned a lesson about rigging on something like this while tied into it...I chose to delete that little "event"

Awesome video very interesting...couple questions and comments

Comments:

Get that groundie a chin strap a couple times he loses his hardhat and what good is it when it falls off?

That way that you put your chainsaw on your saddle seems kind of time consuming...look at attachment this is the way I do it and find it really fast and can do it with one hand and without looking...copied it from Mark C. Just an idea i thought i would show you

Question:
Do you find working with loopies gets time consuming compared to just a running bowline?

Yes he did indeed need a chinstrap. Check.
I like your saw set up. I will try that tommorrow. Check.
I like the loopies and a biner. I find it fast and easier for a new guy to understand. I also like that it cant be pulled through the block or pulley....or in this case ,I used a small clevis to rig from.

so you had a line in the top of a pine that ran down to your truck? if thats what i seen in the video i must say.....bravo! you just gave me an idea how to drop a dead oak i been scratchin my head about. did the scope in the climb line feel any different being suspended like that?

Why not just clip the ring to the caritool? Way less cluter.

One benefit of having the clip is that it can then go anywhere else real quick if you are in an awkward position. The ring can only go on the caritool, so its not as versatile. Personally I take the ring off and put the clip where the ring is, so its further way from the saw, makes it even easier to get you hand to it.

yup with the ring it allows you only one way to clip on to the caritool...the clip is awesome way...and it really isnt all that clutter at all

YES! Its like being on a bungee. I actualy clipped the traverse line into a carabiner(choked onto a spar) to keep it from dropping so much. Its kind of fun once you get the groove. I was using the bounce to help me climb. I would never try this without 2 bomber anchor points AND I would very much like to know what kind of forces I am putting on the anchor points. As starnge as it all was...I liked it alot better than using that decrepit pecan as my main tie in.

I notices you rigged off the same line you were tied into... I wouldnt have done that. For the same reason as you try and not tie into the same area you are rigging from in a normal crotch of a tree. Not a criticism, just be safe.

The shackle that you use to rig off of do you worry about the pin unscrewing if it flips over in the loopie? Very good call useing the pine tree and truck for your traverse line.I was once told that if you have a 100ft line between two points and you apply 200lbs of wieght to the middle of the line it triples at the anchor points. I had paper work on the figures can't put my hands on it right now though.

A good example of that is when the tree is too heavy to pull over like you thought with a 4:1. So you lean into the pull line and over she comes. Another good video.

Nice work Amigo !! Bravo!! I remove a large rotten sycamore tree w/a long traverse a couple wks ago , but no pics sorry ,

Take care and keep them videos going , they keep me entertained ..

Later in SO-CAL
