Too late to spray my crabapple trees?

It took me almost two weeks to get a quote (after the site visit) for spraying the crabapple trees, pruning etc. We decided against cabling and paid only for the spraying (little less then $500). This was around 4/25.

They've still never shown up. I called yesterday and got a lame excuse - as in "I don't know why....."

They claimed that its not too late for them to spray, their spraying program is a leaf protectant. They make 3 trips.... seems awfully late to start this.

Pondracer I think the blame is partially yours.

Getting out there to quote takes me usually a fourtnight. For small jobs you get a written quote that instant. Bigger jobs can take two weeks before the customer gets the quote in writing send. If they want the treework done in a jiffy they're usually not in it for the quality but for the oportunity.
Getting there to do the job varies from one to two months after approval of the quote.
Don't blame a contracter that he is too late, usually the customer calls late and thinks he is the only one that calls. There is not a treecare company on each street corner! If there is a real and hazardous problem praise the company that is there in a blink of an eye.

What's wrong with the trees in America that they all need spraying. Don't you think some of the plagues go by "natural couse".
Usually spraying means killing one bad guy and in the proces of doing so 100 good guys that should be there to keep the tree healty.

It has been a number of years since I've done any spraying so maybe there are new materials available so my advice maybe off. The rule of thumb for spraying Crabapples, for scab control, was before the leaves were 2/3's expanded. $450 sounds pricey for 3 applications unless you have a fair amount of trees. Definitly pricey for missed timed apps.

Poundracer, it is too late. We just finished our third round. Did you try contacting Kramer Tree? Check our site Kramer Tree.com

Dude, this is America we can have it our way! were not gonna do somthing responsible like cutting the disease prone trees down and replace them with resistant varietys. We want our cake and we get to eat it to. America's got somthing for everything even if you don't need it. Heyyyyyyyy isn't the "Netherlands" where Dutch Elm Disease came from? /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

LOL No tnttree, let me tell you how it went. Once upon a time there was a little Dutch elm. His parents were sick of him (he was a thickheaded ass) so they send him on a oceansteamer to New Amsterdam (that's where family lived). On the ship the conditions where very bad, so when he got to the shore he had a little rash.
The little Dutch elm went to the doctor and he told him that it could be fixed. He sprayed and pufed and sprayed again and the rash was over. The little Dutch elm went outside and was so clean without help from his little critterfrends that he got a terrible disease.

Hence: The Dutch elm disease. /forum/images/graemlins/icon314.gif

Hi, we didn't contact Kramer for this. I was going to, but Care of Trees was recommended by a guy who did some consulting work for us last year. I just figured since they were a national company with a good reputation that as long as the price was ok we would just go with them.

Their arborist was supposed to call me back yesterday and I never heard from him. About 7:30AM their applicator guy called me and asked if it was ok to do this today. I quizzed him about it being too late, but he claimed they do it all summer long. At this point its not worth my time to argue, I figure its best to just get it done ASAP in the hopes it has some positive effect.

Hey Wolter,

Believe me, I'd rather not spray these trees if I didn't have to, they just get really bad apple scab every year. The trees are mature, so wacking them down and just replacing them with a disease resistant variety is not really an option... especially if you ask my wife.

As for timing, I made the initial call the last week of March. I just assumed that was early enough. Live and learn. What I really want is a good relationship with a single company to handle all my tree work. I hate to have to get competitive quotes every time I need something done. To be honest it takes too much of my time. Problem is pricing that varies so widely on some things.

Thanks for the comments.
