Tokyo Railway Treework

Nice music, especially in the first one. What species is the dead or dormant tree in the second video? Surprised by the use of snap cuts instead of face cuts when rigging out the trunk wood but maybe it helps reduce shock load and faster?
Very clean rigging

It is a Zelkova and you are right, less shock loading and much less cutting time. It turned into bit of a teaching session as my team are not used to cutting like that in such sized timber. Thanks.

Very Japanese. Clean, efficient, and uses latest technology!

Great rigging. Pleasure to watch a big job go smoothly and safely. Everything anticipated and executed beautifully. Thanks for taking time to put these vids together. I know it's not easy.

Dude that was rad! Nice work on the videos and the rigging/cutting. The pollen coming off that conifer top in the first video made my allergies act up from all the way in Oregon. Must be the jet stream...

What is the name of the portable winch used in 2:48 of the first video?

Thanks so much. The winch is a Portable Winch, model 5000.
I am so lucky not to suffer from hayfever, some of the guys ran temperatures it was so strong...time to take an office job perhaps....?

Paul, it’s always great to see you and your team work. Those videos really capture the whole vibe. That “face” on the stump reminds me of the Seiji Han shirt! So fun to watch the rigging unfold as the tree sections glide around.

Your team is looking great! Thanks for posting!

Thank you, Oceans.
I look forward to time rigging together again.

Maybe you can explain to everyone here what/who/why(!) is Seiji Han !

We just had a nice rigging workshop through Shelter, and I actually explained the Seiji Han there.

For anyone wondering, Seiji Komatsu san is a fantastically cool Japanese tree worker. He has a technique of butt hitching leaders in half on dead eye slings, leaving all the inverted branches in place, then felling the whole tree (now at almost half its original height) into a zone that it wouldn’t have originally fit. Apparently, he sometimes has to wrap the whole sh’bang together before felling it so the hanging branches stay tight with the trunk as it goes over.

Seiji is the man...”han” means “half”...Seiji Han. Somewhere I have some photos of him doing it back in Mie.

Looking forward to rigging with you again, Paul!

Oh mhan, did you really teach Seiji Han in the US, haha, can’t wait to tell him !

Thank you !
Well, Let’s just say I explained it. Not to diminish the whole thing. Sean and I use it for larger laterals that we may want to butt hitch then lift before lowering. I described it in that context as a Seiji Han, with an explaination of the name’s origin and Kudos the the man, himself.

That’s how I use it too.
If you float a hub on the rigging line you can turn that first cut, the Han, into a Span rig.
Variations on a Han. That title wouldn’t look too amiss on a John Cage album!
