BOUNTIFUL, Utah - A 2-year-old was shocked by a high voltage power line that fell onto a swingset at 733 W. 3200 South in Bountiful. Police are calling it a freak accident and Bountiful City Power is cutting down tree branches, one of which police say, fell on a power line that broke, hitting the boy who was swinging on a swingset. Police say the high voltage went up his foot and out his shoulder.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Jake Marland was playing at his aunts house when it happened. The voltage was so strong that police think the heat melted the swing. Police say Jake was conscious when paramedics arrived and a helicopter transported him to the burn unit of the University of Utah Hospital.

"Electrical burns are very serious because it causes internal injuries that they won't know for probably several days," said Sgt. Gary Koehn, Bountiful Police.

Wow thats unbelievable. I hope the power company gets hit with a huge lawsuit. I could never see my 2 year old son being shocked by a power line.

I hope the little one is doing well. You're making the assumption that the limb that broke the line was just hanging over the power line and that it's the power company's fault. Most people say we over prune already. It could have been a limb or top from high up in the canopy, are the utilities suppose to prune ground to sky on everything and even then it would be tough to rule out high winds that come with the Monsoon season here. It could have been a tree like a Lombardi poplar with not limbs in the ROW but they would certainly be long enough if they broke out to make contact with the lines, are the utilities suppose to remove anything and everything that could possible break and make contact with the lines. We would have 60+ ROWs in residential neighborhoods completely void of tall growing trees.

It could have been a tree that the homeowner fought to only allow minimal pruning.

I hope to hear the facts of this investigation before any blame is laid.

I hope he will suffer no long term effects. That being said why would there be a swing set under wires. was there no other place.

Sounds to me like the blame has already been laid.

Put yourself in the EMT's shoes. A job I could never imagine.

I think I'd be in tears.

And this was no freak accident.

I'm sorry, but there are a lot of incompetent people doing line clearance. I'm not trying to pick a fight with competent line clearance guys/gals, I'm just say'n...
