Todays morning job

I live by the Jersey shore and there will be no need for a swimsuit. Bring some nice warm clothes. The wind and cold make for a enjoyable winter at the shore. /forum/images/graemlins/coolsun.gif

Rupe,

It can't be predicted. We have some +-0* temps and some mild days like today (60*). Two years ago we had a few 70* days and the year before that there were multiple -0* days. Go figure?

At any rate, the beach is nice to look at and there's plenty to do. Let me know if she needs any help with anything or advice the I may lend.

Oh, so it might not be as bad as I thought then. I'll let her know. Thanks for the offer of help/advice. Only help she'll probably need is learning to drive on the right side of the road!

Rupe,

I had the same problem in your country. They put me in a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car- the right! Then I had to drive on the left! If that wasn't hard enough, they only had a manual (stick shift) available and that had to be done with the left hand! Wow!

I got used to it pretty quick. The only problems I encountered was driving in the circles (rotary). It was difficult to get in and out without wanting to drive in the wrong direction. It was like a Chevy Chase movie. The only other problem was after sitting in a restaurant and having a couple beers. A few hours later, we hopped into the car and started back to the hotel. There were no other cars for about ten minutes or so. Then I saw one coming towards me and it clicked- I'm on the wrong side of the road! /forum/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

It was fun. Oh, and today the temp will be in the upper 30's F.

Thanks for the advice, her company has an office in West Long Branch so thats why she's staying there. Any particular places in the south that are worth a visit?

When you say circles, do you mean roundabouts? We have more here than anywhere as far as I know. Best thing about them is getting our Canadian friends to say it. Always worth a laugh...

There's lot's worth seeing. It really depends on what interests her. If she likes city life-
NYC (1 hr), Phili (1.5 hrs), maybe a 3-4 hr drive to see Washington DC?

Gambling and casinos/shows- Atlantic City (1-1.5 hrs south).

Skiing and mountains- (2-2.5 hrs) Poccono Mts. in Pennsylvania. There's some skiing in NJ, but I would rather drive another 1/2 hr to ski in PA.

Football games- NY Giants and NY Jets play in NJ at the Meadowlands.

There's horse racing and other things as well.

Most of the NJ shore is very quiet this time of year. It's not bad to just drive along the coast to see the shore and the beach houses. But this time of year, I would probably tell her to take a day trip to NYC and see a show, shop, check out the Tree at Rockefeller Center... Or if she only wants a short trip she could take a fifteen minute drive to Redbank, NJ. There's a little bit of shopping and shows there too. (Nice pubs too)

She could also hit most of these spots from the train that stops right in Long Branch.

Is this her first trip to the NJ/NY area? How long of a stay will she have?

Wow, thanks for that. I'm sure that will keep her busy. She's there for one month I think starting sometime in January. Not sure how much of that time she will have to spend working. Also I guess her colleages in the Long Branch office will have plenty of advice for things to do, so I'll pass on your advice and leave it up to her to sort it out. My guess is shopping and pubs will be high on the list. She's exactly the same as me except I don't like shopping!

What's so hard about 'roundabout'?

I envy the system..its actually much more efficient at keeping traffic flowing. Stop lights are not. Only fault comes when the Canadian tourists don't know where they're going.......wouldn't know about that...but I hear that its an issue.

When I visited Paolo last year I had the luxury of spending time riding with him to get my mind on the right track. When it came time for me to drive it was much easier. It does take a bit of thinking to understand the right of way seniority on the roundabouts.

When I was driving with my girlfriend we made a couple of wrong exits on the roundabouts. This lead to some long, loopy drives to get back on track. We came up with a way to eliminate these detours. If we weren't sure which exit to take we would repeat the mantra "When in doubt, roundabout" and keep driving in circles until we had the proper exit figured out.

I've noticed a few 'bouts in the Denver area. They make a lot of sense. Keeps traffic flowing smoother and it also slows traffic speed down. Better than putting up more stop signs on every corner. The problem is that most American drivers stop at the corner of a 'bout just like there is a stop/yield sign there.

tom, my wifes from PA, when she first came over here she hated roundabouts until she clicked on to the fact like you that she could just go round and round till she worked it out, now she loves them.
went to france last year, learning to go round the donuts opposite way about is pretty confusing.
rupe, theres one of them magic roundabouts at colchester, looks confusing as hell on the approach, it actually works real well though and isnt confusing at all(for a man)

That looks too complex for most people. There used to be a lot circles around here. Too many accidents and too much traffic developing due to how many drivers had no clue to the order of "right of way". Now there's only a few left.

I see two types of problem drivers on the circles: 1)The "I have no idea what I'm supposed to do here" type. and 2) The "I can't stand these people so I'm just gonna speed right through this thing and cut people off" type. Either one can cause major problems for traffic flow. I'm glad to see the circles replaced with new intersections. They require too much thought for people that aren't capable.

When we drive on them here, you pretty much enter whenever it's clear and then you have the right of way to keep going. When I was in Canada, there were a few cars on the "rotary" so I waited my turn. One went by and there was another right behind it. It stopped? The car behind me started honking at me? I wanted to get out but my wife told me that it was my turn to go?

Then I was on the thing and had to go to the second exit. At the first exit I was behind a car that was racing past so I followed him. The car waiting to enter almost railed me! I was ticked. Then my wife told me that it was his turn? After I exited the thing, we talked and I learned that it was like an "all-way stop". She said that "it's one for one". Ohhhhhhh! /forum/images/graemlins/blush.gif
