I'll take this one. Not enough.

Haha! Thanks. Yeah, not nearly enough. We have 5 plus my brother (6) who doesn't seem to make it out on the jobs too often anymore. /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

5 climbers! must be nice! next time you get bummed about it, try the humble thought of being a one man opp. (actually we just don't have a big enough market here) no wonder i haven"t had time to post stuff lately! seriously though nice work especially the pruning! pruned but not overpruned!

Re: Today\'s job

That is cool good to hear that the wood is going back to the customer for something they can use. I did a removal 2 weeks ago and the nieghbor said he would take the logs for his workshop. Well I dropped by the customers house to pick up a pruning job they wanted and the questionaire my budd left( had no clue about that), and looked at the logs that are still laying in the back of his driveway.
Geez six guys on staff there are at most 4 of us and man we have still no time. but in all great job.

Re: Today\'s job

We were going to fell the trunk and then pick it, but since it was occupied we picked it. He flew over the house and next to the drive and stayed there. I loaded the wood around 4:00 or so and he was still there. So, I grabbed the end of the log and moved it a bit until he left. No babies in there so the log was loaded.

Re: Today\'s job

hey mark, nice shots!! i just recently did a crane removal in ct. and your right, the guy running the crane has got to be good. on my job i didn't know the operator and had never worked with him,in fact i told the sales rep that the operartor was my only unknown factor. so we started with acouple of easy limbsand he did alright, but when we got to the wood he got skittish and wasnervous about taking too big of a piece so we took a smaller on, about ten feet. i knew we should have gone bigger but... well the piece does a cartwheel and nearly takes my head off. icollect myself go down have a few words with the guy and went back up to finish it off. went smooth from then on but i thought i was going to leave my wife a widow and my daughter fatherless.

Re: Today\'s job

Wow, not a nice thought-especially on Father's Day!!

Whenever I work with a "new" operator, I always spend time discussing what I will do before I ever leave the ground.

When I did a crane workshop in Halifax last summer, I worked with a guy who didn't know me and I didn't know him. To add to the stress we were being watched by attendees plus the local TV and newspapers were there. We started discussing the moves on the ground. Then I did exactly that. After the top was gone I asked him if he wanted the trunk in 1 or 2 pieces. I told him the total weight and he said to go in 1. He said that he was comfortable with me now and could see that I knew what to do.

Without doing the "warm-up" it can be tough on both of you. And, when picking a piece that you planned on cutting bigger than the operator wants to, make sure to check the slings for balance. I have even told the operator before that we had to take it bigger to keep it from doing what yours did. Do what you need to do to go home safe each day!

Re: Today\'s job

I visit this area even more often now do to a removal that we will be doing in july, and for a first time with a crane this area is full of info. I will do on the go over with the operater before the job and the ins and outs of the job with him to.
