Tight Eye 16 strand

Crimsonking

Been here a while
I am about to make my first splice, and want to tight eye splice a snap onto some hivee. What measurements do I need for that? Any other tips or tricks?

The eye size flat length is always a variable based on finished eye size. Just fold the eye into position and mark the rope.

3.5" seems to be the magic # for a tight eye. x2 on what robinia said. not fun to go through all the trouble of setting up the finish, just to find out you dont have enough material. but if you have a bit too much material it seems you can always get it to bury a little more.

Thanks, guys. I used the above video and the Samson written guide. Ran out of time to finish last night, but will have photos for critiquing today I hope. I want to describe my experience to see if you all can detect anything that may have happened that I wouldn't have picked up on since I'm just starting. Thanks again!

So... No photos yet. I am stuck on the crossover. Impossibly tight. I used a coat hanger for lack of tools. Is that enough info for diagnostics and tips to get through?

Don't know if this will help or not but here's an old post of mine where I had the same issue.

I broke my coat hanger pulling it with vise grips. I never finished that 16 strand splice but...I learned since then, one thing to watch out for (on many splices), when you're beginning the bury make sure the cover (the mouth/opening where the bury is starting) isn't folding over with the core to be buried. Get it started right by keeping the bury entrance open and the rest will be easier. If you watch carefully in the wespur video you'll see him doing what I'm trying to explain. Hope that makes sense.

Also, whatever you're burying can be made thinner by keeping tension on it :)

Make sure you haven't picked up any extra core strands with the fid when you are going in to grab and bury the cover - it's really easy to do and will jam you up solid. Around 9:00 in the video.
Also ensure that you got all the core fibers out to begin with. It sounds simple but any left in will bung everything up. Even the plastic tracer will be able to plug you up if its not all out.

I really liked Tuttle's throw line idea. I am going to see if my jam is reversible and give it another go. Thanks for the feedback. This is why I like tree buzz.

My project has been in the closet for a while after the jam. (I'm sure I'm not the only one working late and chasing three kids at home.) Tonight I pulled the jam, buried all the way to my exit, and broke the hanger at the bight. Then I discovered that, as you all warned me, the plastic strip was bunched up, blocking my exit. It is back in the box until later this week. I do hope to have a photo up soon. Thanks again for the feedback.

If you're splicing one of the major brands 16 strand, your tight eye will be about 14 strands long. Plan for a 15 strand eye, then when you get to that part of the splice, put the carabiner in the eye and cinch it up while burying the throat of the splice. Continue with the rest of the splice as usual.

I can't see why not. It's only really in there for retaining the shape in the rope - most of the strength is in the cover. I cant see how that would help with the bury though. Seems like it would be more likely to get all messed up in there.

He has some nice tricks in there that you have to see a number of times to pick up on, like anchoring the core on the last bury.
