Tieing off mid line

The other day I tried something new , for me anyway. Footlocked up with Machrd above my prussik as I typically do. But , instead of pulling up all that tail to hook in my Eye to my Machard,I hooked my Grigri on midline and then attached my Machard to it.It only enables you to work off half the rope, but when needed just let out more line on the Grigri end. Worked well, and made for a quik tie off..Anybody do this or something simular?..

Thanks Greg

Hi Greg,I have sometimes footlocked up with a vt on both legs of the rope and could do some work by using one of the knots to descend on the other staying locked up,found this clumbsy though like your idea mutch better.

That can be worked into some nice options. Got to get the gri or the bling bling of belay device. Sounds like a good start though 'fool. Keep workin it. Get it ready for TCI

Yep, I do this often, using a climbing hitch on both sides for footlocking, then just working off it. IT IS WAY IMPORTANT to have stopper knots tied at both ends of the rope, especially when starting out with this technique.

I met some tree activists in Colorado who had done something similar surveying for tree voles in Oregon. Instead of using a doubled rope arb system, or sending a noose up to fix the line, they would kleimheist up both strands simultaneously. I didn't like the idea- say you are using two knots- when one is loose isn't there just the other knot to lock the thing into balance?

It is great to hear, different ascending aproaches, and thinking outside the cube or box. Something that you don't want to forget is when ascending with doubled line, with two or one hitch (prusic). That your hands are below that hitch at all times. To avoid a possible slip on the rope and running the hitch(s) to the ground.
