throw bag weight

A week or two ago I went to Walmart and bought a fishing rod with 65 lb line. I bought this for making higher shots I normally wouldn't make with the 2.2 mm zing-it and the BS. I tried taking one shot with the fishing line and an 8 oz bag, the results were subject to interpretation. The bag towing the line managed to go over the entire back yard of my house, a 60' tall black birch, and ended up in SOMEBODY's back yard, I don't know whose because it just went so darn far. Any of you guys have ideas for a good bag weight to go along with this type of line? I wasn't even pulling very hard on the BS to achieve those results.

I have thought about doing this myself (always comes to mind while fishing) but it would have to be such a large tree. Nothing in my area is really too tall for me to throw into. I suggest just spending time to get better at the throw line, it will be much more accurate then a fishing pole. Also, once you get to a certain height there is no way to tell if what you are climbing on will break half way up. Just my $0.02

I use 1.75mm zing-it and a 10 oz harrison rocket and can easily get it 100 feet with the big shot. I have found that I like this line and bag combination the best out of all the ones that I have tried.

My fav is 1.75 mm Zing it w/Harrison Rocket. My other bags are 8-12 oz cordura from Sherrill. Be sure to get the ones with the pointed end so that they tip off of the branches.

After I set my line I do a visual like everyone. Then I start to bounce on the line. First I just tug and pull. Then I jump on the rope adding a higher jump until I'm doing body slams. If there is ever an doubt about the strength of the TIP, two of us will jump on the line.

Fireline is a favorite fishing line for trees.

I use a fishing reel and 40 lb. monofilament setup with my Big Shot to set lines over about 100 feet. I use a 14 oz. bag, usually. My range tops out at about 150 feet. From 100 down to about 50 feet I use 3mm kernmantle throwline and a 16 oz. bag. Hand throw under that. Rough barked conifers are the norm in my world, so heavy bags are required, even pulling monofilament. I think I could hit higher targets with a 10 oz. bag and mono, but it is no fun when you hit your target fine but the bag won't fall /forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif. I test my anchor point strength just as Tom describes. That's a critical point.

I agree, The 10 once bag and the zing-it seems to be a very good combination.I tried the rino line, but even flaked neatly on the ground it tended to kink and snare itself sending a mess into the tree.
