Thimble question

For those of you that use spliced rigging lines with thimbles (is there anyone that does?)- I have a guy who wants me to splice a rigging line for him. He just wants to be able to hook a carabiner to it. I mentioned thimble to him and he hadn't considered the option. He does a few large removals and was concerned with the thimble breaking...especially if it was plastic. I've only used thimbles on climbing lines.

Should I use a metal thimble for this, or would the plastic ones be fine?

He is an older guy who doesn't have time to be fussing with knots. He currently uses ropes with a snap-hook tied on permanently. I suggested using carabiners so that if the 'biner did get trashed, he can replace it only, rather than cutting off the last 2 feet of rope and tying on a new one.

Good advice, Mahk. I forgot about the coldness factor. Looks like steel it is. For my 170lb butt (that's including a MS200t) a plastic thimble is fine, but I guess for a thousand pound log, it's a whole nother story.

I used to have a 5/8" Dbl. braid with a bronze thimble attached. The thimble was about 4" across and the bight was held in place by the thimble itself with bronze straps just like that plastic one.
sorry dont remember where I bought it. I think at Feeny Wire & Rope co.
In Oakland, CA.

For those that are interested.....

After much deliberation, I've opted against the thimble. I did three lowering lines for this guy (150', and a 450' with a splice on each end that he will cut when needed) in 9/16th Yale Double Esterlon. I put 1" tubular webbing on for a bit of chafe protection. He was going to go for 1/2 line, but I talked him into the slightly larger size, after seeing the huge pieces of wood he shock loads onto his lines!

Thanks guys!
