the vote

Location
S.Texas
Here goes guys. I had 2 jobs scheduled for retired people on fixed incomes and the day after "the vote" they canceled because they feared they were going to loose their Medicare.
I wonder what's next.

That shows how much misunderstanding there is about the law. Medicare isn't going to go away but its sure not the place for arborists to explain this to our clients.

There may be a 'cost' to all of us for this new law. But...let's look at how many other governmental expenditures cost us money. To me...the way that the wars have been managed has been a huge waste of money. If there were better management the economy would have 'extra' money to fund other projects that benefit us taxpayers.

That is an old tired arguement Tom!! Im sorry I really Like you man, I do, but please do not trot out that tired old rhetoric to justify this huge expanse of Government. The Fact that the Wars cost money does Not make it Ok for them to mismanage money. Listen how insane that sounds.thats like me saying well I sure wasted a lot on those ads that idnt work last year , I think ill go spend alot more on a crane!! WHAT!
OH yeah its great isnt it we can keep our kids on our insurance til there 26 .......HUH? if my kids are still on the dole at that age i have NOT done my job as a parent.. What the heck are we creating here MY GOD WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!WAKE THE HECK UP!!

Tait...given the limitations of this format we'll both have to be content with how we can discuss these issues.

The most amazing thing about the US throughout it's history, from colonial times too, is the resiliency found when it's time for change. There have been many challenges faced during the history and look, things may not be as good as any of us would like individually, as a group, things are going in the generally right direction.

Personally I don't like seeing my taxes being spent on ill managed wars...notice, managed...I'm not talking about the motives or justifications...that's a whole other thread that has been gone over extensively here and everywhere.

Its sad that people think that Medicare is going to go away or be threatened. Which part of the media is perpetuating that? I like getting my 'truth' from the middle not the edges.

This bill is full of pork and was rushed through. Its going to add a burden to medicare/caid, which is already a failing and overstressed project. The American people dont quite realize it yet but this bill is going to cost Mucho Denero!

What social projects have the American Govt taken on that have come out in the black, or good? You said above that as a whole we are moving in the right direction. medicare/caid? Social Security (ill be lucky to see a penny from it!)? Amtrak? Postal Service? They are all huge failures.

I am a supporter of needing healthcare reform laws passed, but not this, this isnt going to help us. Hope I am proven wrong!

I've never understood people who complain about the postal service, I think it's very efficient and definitely cheap. I grew up in four western countries and the american postal service is by far the best. What do people expect from it for the price we pay for it.
As far as the healthcare overhaul, from what I've read, and looking at the breakdown of cost by the independent commission, I like it a lot.

Sorry, you guys just know how to draw me in. Banjo.. here you go.http://www.whitehouse.gov/medicarefactsheetfinal/ and this is just a est. who knows what the final bill will be.

Boston.. I'm glad you feel the way you do, because I follow Massachusetts very closely. All you have to do is look in your own back yard. Mass univ health care is MILLIONS over what Romney put thru. Boston General over a five year period was always in the black, now its almost bankrupt. Check with the Boston Globe, oh about January. "OUR" GOVERNMENT will now or very shorty "own or control" over 50% of the american economy. Want to be like Europe? Go to Europe. Any one following Caterpillar or John Deere? Its est that their cost combined will be 250 million a year and their union. What do you think the cost will be for the rest of us. America will be bankrupt and for what? (don't listen to the media) 12 million people? For the record, yes we do need some reform.
Sorry I gotta go.....................

They lose millions of dollars every year. At least they are losing their own money and not our tax dollars.

Welcome to the dark side Russ.

To get back to the point of this thread, i.e., the loss of work because of a perceived threat to someone's income.

Prior to "the vote" was the collapse of the financial markets, which happens on a regular basis. Many of us lost jobs to the fear that people would lose the incomes, savings, houses, hamsters, dogs, cats, kids, in-laws (well to be fair most only wish they could lose these!), etc, etc....

People will always perceive some sort of threat when they live on fixed incomes and need to watch their pennies.

My wife and I are talking about reducing the scope of a renovation because we're afraid of unforeseen expenses biting us on the butts! Bet the contractor is going to be telling this tail of woe to all his buds.

Be understanding with them and throw them a bone so they'll come back when the sky doesn't fall. Guarantee the price say for the next 2 mths. This way they'll feel confident in you and if nothing has happened to the medicare over that period they'll be motivated to do the work for FEAR that the price is going to go up!

maybe 250K isn't much in the northeast but it's a lot here. Our average house price is less than 200K. If you have a combined income of 100K you are doing very well here. I think the average yearly salary here in texas is right around 18K.

I might believe that in the boondocksm, but not in a city like Austin. Its the same around here, if you live in the boonies where theres no economy, prices drop across the board. get near a city and watch out!

This will tax more people/families/small business owners than not.

Yeah I have heard around and around the (quilting bee ) guys about how much this is going to destroy small owners. I have to look for a new ins. comp. now mine just raised my fee and well that blows. It was hard enough finding a good rate. Luckly they are helping with the transistion for now. Around here when gas went through the roof alot of the small owners folded. I can't wait for the next round.

The northeast is one of the most affluent parts of the country. Even the rural areas are going to cost big dollars to live in, sometimes more. I don't think its fair to use our regional economy as a barometer for the rest of the country. We have it pretty damn good up here.

My wife and I make well under that and still do ok. Sorry but if I made basically double what we earn now I'd be a whole lot happier about the finances. I'm off for my MRI now courtesy of Oxford Health and my wife's firm.

Have a good one!
