The Splicing Thread

More questions!!

Alright, I placed another order with John for some HRC, Blaze, and Prolite. First question, am I correct that Blaze and Prolite and both Class 1 Double Braid splices.

Next, I understand on the HRC I'll be using locked brummels. But to preform the splice, do I pull back the cover to get to the hollow braid core or how does that work?? And would I do a locked brummel on both ends, or only on one end and a brummel on the other.

Re: More questions!!

Hey Ranger,

Locked brummel on both ends. You can pull the cover back, or pull it all the way off and slip it back on when done. I need to head your way soon and do some splicing with ya.

Re: More questions!!

Pulling the cover off screwed me up big time. When I went to slide it back on it fell apart on me. Next time I do any friction cord I think I will leave the cover on. Does anyone have a method they use for taking the cover off and keeping it intact but loose enough to slide it back over the eyes once the splice is done?

Re: More questions!!

Pstuffel- did you have the end of the cover GENTLY taped? I find that if you have it loosely taped, then run a piece of throwline or pull fid (splicing wand) through, the cover will slide over without unraveling.

Another option, and the way I've done it for a few years now is to leave the cover ON the rope. I start out by pretending I'm splicing double braid. Go down from the end of the rope a distance of about 6" (which you will fine tune for your personal style), pull the core out there, do the eye splice (using the mobius brummell which is super easy in hrc or beeline) then slip the cover back up. After one or two splices you should be able to fine tune it so the slipped-up cover ends RIGHT where you want it to.

Now whip down the cover, cut the excess off, dip it, flip it over, do the other eye, and you're good to go.

Re: More questions!!

Thanks everyone!! I received my new order from John today and I can't wait to dig into it all later!! As far as HRC, John all ready took the liberty of cutting off some cover at each end so all I have to do is slide the cover back a bit to perform my splice. Thanks for that John!!

I'm also loving the feel of the Blaze. If I can get the splice down, I will probably end up ordering some for a 120' climb line so I don't have to keep pulling out my 150' Tachyon for every little tree!

Re: More questions!!

Thanks Zac!! I have a short 65' or so Hi-Vee line that I use for the short trees. If I need anything longer, usually 120' will work for most everything.

I just spliced some ProLite(my first double braid since the symposium) and other than a minor core bunching problem during the final bury, it turned out pretty good. And after talking with Rich I found out how to avoid that bunching problem from now on with DB.

Re: More questions!!

120' is too short for me. I went to 150' and now I'm finding that's too short for many of the trees I'm doing in NJ. Time for a new rope, 200' and reducing the old one to an 80' shortie for the little jobs.

Re: More questions!!

120' is a decent line around here. We don't do too many big trees. But when we traveled to the last competition and the recent symposium, it looked like a 200' would have been nice. So that's next on the list after a new 120'.

Hey Zac, from what I understand, when you do the final bury as you're working it in, take time to milk the slack in the eye around towards the end you're burying. From what Rich said and what I understood, that helps equalize everything and avoids core bunching.

Re: More questions!!

Keep tension on the eye, too. Stick a biner or fid in the eye and pull that (instead of just grabbing with your hand).

I think what rich was explaining to you was if the eye DOES start to bunch, you can push the bunching over to one side, pinch down hard and pull the tail back out a little to zero out the cover/core balance in the eye.

If you see bunching starting, stop right away and fix it. Go too far and you might have to chop the splice off and start over!

Re: More questions!!

Hey Nick,

I tried the loose tape idea like you suggested and had better luck. I still had a little unraveling on the cover when I took the tape off. Is it ok to just whip over the tape or am I still missing something?

Re: More questions!!

I just removed the tape on the HRC when it came time to slid it over the the tapered part of my splice and up to the eye. I had stitched just the core before I pulled the cover over it and I was able to hold it together enough and whip it where I had very little unraveling after the whipping was finished.

Also, anyone have any tips for splicing Tachyon. I just ordered 24' or so to practice on before I splice up the new 120' Tachyon line I also ordered. I talked with John over making sure you get all the strands in the third core and about tapering them, but other than that I understand it's mostly just a standard double braid splice.

Sounds like you are climbing too high. Try keeping your TIPs below 75 feet, and that should help you avoid the cost of a new 200' rope.

Just trying to be helpful!

Re: More questions!!

Pstuffel- you can leave the tape on if you want, but it looks shoddy when done. It finished much cleaner if you take the tape off first.
