The Fly?

Tried splicing a tight eye in a hank of "The Fly" last night. I don't understand the part where you need to divide the core strands. Maybe if I new why I could do a better job at it.

You need to transfer the core from the lower section of the splice (going through the eye) to the upper portion of the splice (the 1" bury followed by the 6" final bury. In order to move from lower to upper you will need to bypass where you originally buried into the eye section. By going through the center of the core you will make a more seemless transfer and I imagine that the tightening of the core upon itself adds strength.

Hope this helps cause I think I may have just confused myself : )

Yes I understand and it does answer the question. I was talking to Sean from Wesspur today and he told me it is "the" hardest rope to splice. I've done a lot of three strand and made a sling from tenex but maybe got in too deep with "the fly". But I not much of a quitter. The instructions on the New England site I'm not understanding as well as I'd like to. So keep dumping what you now in my pod here and see if I can understand enough to try again. It's just a short piece of rope I take on a climb that I might need a short piece of rope on. No rush.

Its actually a very straight forward splice, but it sure helps a ton to sit down with someone who has done them before you try it out yourself. A major key in this splice is to keep the core strands even and untwisted. It helps greatly to tape the core to a 7/16" fid (you will need to taper the end of the core on a 45 degree angle to do this) and work through the majority of the splice using the hollow fid. The final bury is MUCH easier to do with a wire fid but it is possible to do the whole splice with hollow fids.

Good luck and keep at it.

I have seen that there are splicing gtg's. I wish one would come to a town near me.

Got you so far. But still not ready to try again. I will cut the bad splice from the rope today with a hot knife.

How many stands of core should I be able to get into the fid?
And I thinking that if a core strand becomes unwound while pulling it out of the sheath is bad, correct?

A little reggae and some profanity will help as well, eh Rich. ;)

The profanity is reserved for emergency situations......the reggae happens early and often and helps immensely !!
