You guys are pushing things along too fast... First start by putting the current ladder in the bed of the pick up when you don't have enough height. Then upgrade to putting it in the bucket of the front end loader on the old tractor. Only after that isn't high enough do you put an extension ladder on a step ladder. What is unclear to me with whether you use drywall stilts on the ladder or not???

Also, do you leave the pickup truck in reverse, idling, to hold the whole works tight up against the limb, or do you tie a rope around that crumbling chimney to keep tension on everything? Tough call. Best to just get another beer out of the cooler and contemplate the correct procedure. Should be obvious within six beers.

Rope is pretty cheap at Home Depot, why not do both for extra added security.

I'm a fan of ladder and machete operations. Not great for trees, but like the porcupines and sapsuckers their damage is limited and they have a place in the natural order of things. I'd sooner shoot a beaver than legislate these fellas out of existence.

When I was on the bark beetle project in NorCal they wanted me to wear arm chaps because I used a hatchet in the tree to pound wedges. I started climbing with a mini sledge instead.
