The BEST so far.

The APTA is a great line setting tool! Far better than anything else currently available and the new valve makes it butter smooth. With it you will find yourself making impossibly difficult shots, the first try.

I'd love to build my own just for fun, i wonder if TS would sell "assembly required" for less $$... Stickers and all.

Used to love building the old spud guns in my younger years and i believe i've got alot of "tactical" 12gauge folding stocks, front grips & bunch of other stuff i could customize one with. I'd be even more stoked to figure out some kind of electrically activated pneumatic valve to turn it into a momentary trigger switch

I saw my old potato canon in the garage and thought that is a lot like the APTA. So I found a butterfly valve on line and assembled a new "throw bag" cannon out of PVC. I robbed a gauge & air valve assembly from a old portable air tank. Used 3" diameter PVC for the air reservoir and can accurately launch a 10g throw bag higher than most of the tree around here with only 40 psi. Not as sleek at the APTA and still room for improvement but less $$.

Wrap the PVC with duck tape or something to help keep the shrapnel down, just in case. I've been told PVC is not kind to this abuse...so why do potato canons not explode all the time?

I've always used the thicker PVC for the combustion chamber and joint to barrel and thinner can be used for the barrel. The PVC glue holds quite good honestly, although around the age of 14-15 me and my buddy came up with the fabulous idea of holding it all together during a test shot prior to glueing anything together. Didn't work out to well, blew my arms clear around behind me but luckily no injuries. Tried everything from gasoline mix, starting fluid, anything flammable really but what i found always worked and shot everytime was Grandmas old HairNet hairspray, not even sure they make it anymore:LOL:

With the APTA using compressed air, what kind of connection is used? I have an air compressor onboard my truck, can it be used to fill these using a tire pressure gauge & gun? I've never seen one in person but curious and would love to build one..

Yes, the APTA uses a standard schrader valve. You will need a pressure gauge on the fill line.
One of the beauties of the APTA is its rugged simplicity and how easy it is to transport with our typical tree trucks and gear.

The APTA (AIR POWERED TREE ACCESS) is slick!
-- slick as deer guts on a door knob.

I wasn't sure about this tool. But, it is really is great. It will put a 12oz. throw-weight anywhere I want. It's fun & easy to use. A 12g CO2 is sufficient for almost everything. But, a 16g will send a line higher when necessary.

Never thought of that, i do have the tool to load CO2 cartridges and attachments made to blow out clogged drains/sinks/pipe etc..

I'm actually working on a pretty simple valve attachment that will utilize the compressed air already inside the APTA to incorporate a pnuematic system to pop the main valve only using a trigger assembly. Little side project

They're about $18us for a box of 40 (12g) = $.45 for a full shot of 80-90'.
A hi-volume bicycle floor pump will give about the same result with 6-7 strokes.

Unless you know someone that works at a bakery/Starbucks... Pretty much any place that uses "nitrous crackers" used for making cake cream, cookie or icing creams etc... In my younger days my older sister used to work for a TCBY, alot of her stoner friends would score a bunch of free cases & be doin whip-its for days (from what i've heard that is ;) )

Nitrous cartridges are the same size as CO2 cartridges (16oz i believe).

I understand that it can reach those 90' shots, but for someone who can't throw worth a damn, how well does it handle the shorter shots, like 40' or even 30'? I am interested in this gadget, but I typically need to reach shorter heights, and I need the precision this appears to offer. Can it be reliably controlled to shoot a gentle 40' shot?

The APTA can do far greater than 90' and because it is air powered, if you use a bicycle pump or any air supply with an acute gage, it is infinitely adjustable. Soft shots are just as accurate but because the bag will travel with more of an arch because it is moving at a slower speed, you will need to practice.

How do you guys carry your APTA? Do you take it apart and throw it in a bag with the rest of your gear? Toss in the back seat? Does it have its own special bag to hold it and an air pump, like the BigShot bag?

I noticed some guys using the plastic gun cases to carry them in. Looks like the way to go, to me! Those things are pretty cheap. Last one I bought was only about $40 as I remember it.
