The microchip contains both data programmed by the manufacturer (e.g. name, diameter, length and production date of the rope) and freely programmable data (numerical code, inspection date or identification of the inspecting technician).
 
That's no fun. I thought it might record loading data. Maybe it could tell you max loads, and when you overload it, it could send a signal to a satellite that sends you a text message to go get a new rope.

Doesn't seem like they're telling anything worth any value.
