In the book Arborist Equipment by Don Blair he lists Rope Care Commandments.
Here they are:
1. THOU SHALT HONOR THY ROPE AS THOU WOULD THY LIFE
2. THOU SHALT KEEP THY ROPE AWAY FROM ALL HARMFULL SPIRITS.
3. THOU SHALT NOT CONSORT WITH ROPES THAT ARE UNCLEAN, LEST THOU SUFFER A FALL FROM GRACE.
4. THOU SHALT ELEVATE THY ROPE ABOVE THE DOWN TRODDEN.
5. THOU SHALT KNOW THE PATHS THAT THY ROPE HAS TRAVELED.
6. THOU SHALT BE NIETHER A BORROWER OR A LENDER OF A CLIMBING LINE.
7. THOU SHALT NOT TREAT THY CLIMBING LINE AS A BEAST OF BURDEN.
8. THOU SHALL KEEPETH THY ROPE COOL.
9. THOU SHALL NOT ASSOSIATE WITH THE COARSE OR THE ABRASSIVE.
10. IF THY ROPE OFFENDS THE, THOU SHALT CUT IT WITH A KNIFE AND CAST IT INTO THE DEEPEST PIT.
I like to think these commandments apply to all aspects, all gear in Arborculture. Accenders, life lines, climb lines. saddles, Carabiners, all that good stuff, but in my time in the industry I have seen and actully let other climbers use and even borrow some of my gear. Mostly every carabiner I have was used by someone else prior to me, including my first climb line. I like to know the history of the gear i am putting my life on, but I also trust the climbers I let use my gear litterally with my life. Number 5 and 6 are what puzzle me the most. Point is would you actually rent your gear out for a small price to those who are intersted in trying before buying or would you say no way? Not today- not ever!
