TCI Magazine

[ QUOTE ]
Since we're on the subject of TCIA. There's an article about a small company "who doesn't even own a bucket truck". FYI There are ALOT of small companies that don't own a bucket truck. It's VERY stereotypical of TCIA to think that most tree companies are big. I could use Cynthia's article in the beginning 02/07 as another example. There are some excellent tree companies out there that have alot to put on the table, but could they afford to go to the Indies or Cancun or the Winter Conference??? And I'm not referring to myself or the company I work for. I know the whole TCIA gig and ISA's purpose, hell I'm even a CA. So put forth the money that these organizations say will help your education/company. Who's REALLY benefiting from YOUR pocket???

I'll third that!

I think TCI is a fine magazine, overall; I guess we shouldn't be too quick to slam a free publication that helps promote our industry. It does promote the businesses that supply us, also, and sometimes the articles are not much more than an advertisement. But that's not necessarily bad, either. There's often good information even in a promotional article. It must be hard to fill up a magazine like that every month, most of the people in tree work are not particularly writers, that just happens to not be their field of expertise. Some of the people here have written some excellent articles for TCI and Arborist News (which I gotta say, I think is the best, not to diss TCI). I think of myself as an okay writer, at least, and I feel guilty for not at least trying to write something to help out. I feel like I don't have enough time, but probably I'm just too lazy. If I get myself motivated enough to do it, I'll run it by you guys here. And thanks to you that have done it already.

And so did TCIA.

Good point Dan.

And Skew, you done good. I might have noticed it, but for some reason, the mail from NH gets to CO before NJ?

A couple of things come to mind:
As far as the magazine being free I wasn't aware of that. It has always come to me as part of my membership to the association. It is maybe free to those that send in the card for a free subscription but it is the members and the advertisers who pay for it. Let's face it- most magazines are chock full of ads and the articles are just fluff. In that regard we are pretty lucky at the quality of the articles in our trade journals.
I guess what kind of set me off about this in the first place is the way that we are typically portrayed in popular media. Any time there is a big ice storm somewhere there is a picture of Hap Hazard wizzing away with a saw and marginal or missing ppe. Our local paper here is fond of publishing pictures of ill equiped arborists. So to open TCI and see that just highlights the issue. And read the thread on Dirty Jobs- same deal. Any way like I am wont to say -just one man's simple opinion/ or vise versa
