Tale of two Iron woods

I have a client and he has two iron woods in his yard and one is doing well and the other is leafing our late and is sparse. So my first thought is girlding root. Here is what I know; There is no sign of insect damage, No heavy equipment has been in yard, Mulch ring is not burying the trunk, There is no fabric and I’m not sure about herbicide use for lawn. I have also checked the flare but have not air knifed it yet. Am I missing anything that might be causing this tree to be in decline while the other one is very healthy?

So it's Ostrya not Carpinus?

Lawn looks immaculate, seek herbicide history. 2-4D on a hot day or over-application of something else could have happened.
Get a site history, especially trenching and digging but also any concrete or other masonry work. It's highly alkaline and they rinse that crap out everywhere.

Closer pics would help.

Any discoloration in the leaves? Any pattern to that discoloration if so?

Did you look real close for scale on the twigs?

Girdling roots are certainly a possibility...

Yep ostrya Virginiana. The client transplanted them from his parents’ wooded lot back in the 80’s. I will have to investigate the herbicide angle a little more. Also I’m not sure if this is true but the client did mention he did some research and said that since it is a double stem that it is technically two trees and they are competing against each other. Like I said I haven’t heard such a thing
