No storm blew out one top. I removed it and inspected the rest of the tree and suggested removal the customer said can we take the top out and leave the rest for “privacy and wood peckers” sounded good to me less wood to haul. I’m sure someone will have a problem with the topping but that’s what he wanted and could afford. Are you saying a storm broke a top, and the customer wanted it to "match"?

There are some instances like these where I think topping is appropriate. Some tree is better than no tree if the hazard is mitigatedNo storm blew out one top. Thanks for this description, I dealt with this exact thing today. ~60ft thin oak, taking the top half out before falling the rest. I got a tagline up above me, but only about 10 feet up a slim 30' top. The drop was bound to get caught up in other oaks all around. I made a standard hinge. sure enough the tips caught and fall stopped. I released more and the butt slid down the notch and I kept my face down. I got away with minor scrapes. It was the last cut of the day so I knew it was danger zone. but I had no other idea, the trunk above me was thin and showing rot above a weak crotch, and darkness approached.I have done this quite a few times on even bigger tops, and it is dangerous. Last resort and usually used where getting the top through the canopy has issues. It is a risky technique.
...
If I feel I have to do this, I lean the top over above where the slice cut is installed using kerf cuts and cut wedges or use dead twigs as wedges. I also set pull line to stop the top rotating back over the spar.
