Tachyon eye splice

Hey Fellers,
I put an eye on tachyon, had a question for bigger brains before I splice the other end:

The home internet was down when I felt the splicing urge, so without downloading New England's instructions, I went ahead according to the Samson instructions that I normally use. So, what do you do with that inner core?

After completing the splice, which turned out nicely, the next day I went on to NE's site and found out that I definitely departed from the true path, question is should I chop off that end and flog myself with it like those monks in the Da Vinci Code? Or is it sound, but just a bit screwy?

Here's what I did, in Samson language:
I extracted the inner core at Mark 3, not Mark 2. After completing the crossover as is usual, I more or less took the inner core from Mark 3 and stitched it with about four fat stitches toward the crossover to keep it in place.
The whole thing drew up fine in the final bury, loose end swallowed up by the cover.

Take care,
Ryan

Warning: this comment is based on personal experience and common sense. It has not been confirmed to me by New England/Teufelberger.

You can remove the second/inner core anywhere you like. It has no bearing on the strength of the rope or splice. I like to remove a bit extra on my Tachyon splices, makes the splice easier IMO.

Hi Guys, you gotta be a little careful with that second core. If you just cut it any old place it could get worked down in the core and bunch up.

You're right, it really doesn't have bearing on the strength, but I think it could affect the strength of the splice if it isn't done right. With our break tester shop up here now we could probably run some test comparing one VS the other, but following New England instructions will save you the trouble of figuring out how to do this.

It isn't THAT hard, but like anything, the more practice you do on these, the easier it gets.

I just did one last week and it came out well with a little bumpy on the taper but it looks good. I will try to get a picture up this weekend.

P.S. I was also told that you want to make sure you have your mallet handy that it will help to set the fibers in the splice that it's a splice that doesn't like to be too tight.

Thanks for the tips
I milked out a foot or so of cover and spliced the other end yesterday, more in tune with N.E.'s directions. Turned out well, probably not much more difficult than the first eye.
Somehow, just about every small eye I'm putting on double braid climbing lines ends up just a bit smaller than it ought to be. Maybe if I had about a hundred of these splices to do I'd end up with a few good ones.

Agreed, long live the rubber mallet.
Later on,
Ryan

Hey guys I have a question. How does one extract the core? I bought a new england splicing kit and it said to use the end of the fid. Anyone have a video or something to explain how to do this. Do you have to take the core out in one big piece or strand by strand? Thanks

Just take it out in one big clump. You want to keep it together as much as possible.

I highly recommend getting some normal double braid rope to practice on first so you can get the motions down. Tachyon is just about the hardest double braid splice you can do.

Do the other stuff first- then when it all makes sense, then step over to the tachyon and it will be much more possible.

I tried it on an old double braid rope but I had a really hard time getting the core out. I find it hard making a big enought hole in the cover to pull the core out. I was only able to get a couple of threads at a time. But then again, I was using the end of the fid.

an old double braid rope would be a tricky first splice. With use, the cover strands and the core strands tighten. Depending on the rope, it can tighten up a lot.

What size rope and what size fid were you using? A scratch awl sanded smooth makes a great core-removal tool.

Get some new double braid to practice on. Zac is right.
