Swedish tree care

When stems are prone to split apart we like to take some solid
swedish steel and bolt them together. I think you call it "cabling".
It might look like this. (see attachment)
Juglans cinerea, gray Walnut.

Speaking of rot, you might consider a swedish drainage-system made from
coppper-plates, just nail it on, and let the tree "embrace" it.

This walnut was one out of a set of eight, probably the most northern
mature plantation in Sweden.
It was the only one who got this "treatment" and the condition was so bad
that we had to take it down last autumn. It was strangulated and rotten.
On a side note. Spring is really late this year in Stockholm.
I took these pictures only yesterday.
It's a Tilia, a street 1.6 km of Acers (Faasen's black, I think), and
the collection of Juglans mentioned above.

Nice pics of that walnut. Looks a bit 'old skool' /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Are you sure that those iron braces are not some kind of torture equipment left from the middle ages? /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

How far north is that in Sweden? I have seen some very beautiful trees at abandoned farms in the woods and some 'summer villages'.

I just spent a long weekend in Stockholm. That place rocks /forum/images/graemlins/rock.gif

I did see a mutilated old oak with a freaky looking metal band around it near Skansen. Got some pics somewhere..

I recognize it from a picture in a book called "Svenska Jätteträd" -
"Giant Swedish trees". I haven't seen it in real life yet.
It's the largest tree in Sweden, circumference of 14.11 meter
I reckon it's quite impressive, right Wolter ?

It's very impressive, especially if you know that the tree was there for such a long time without any help. Then there was a time that they thought the tree needed support and the "problems" started to kick in. There are a few big metal braces around the tree and one leader failed already by choking. There is nothing in this tree that couldn't be fixed by pruning.
If you are standing under that tree your hands itch to get the gear out of the truck and do some serious treesaving.

If anyone has to do work on that "big one" I am up for it to help for free...

Wolter
