storm in Hawai'i

storm in Hawai\'i

Well it's not all hula girls and drinking maitai's on the beach

Last week it's been storming pretty heavily, two days ago winds sustained at close to 70mph here on Oahu. Lots of trees went down. Here's one weeping fig (Ficus benjamina) that we worked on today. Lots of little branch failures and fortunately nothing too large.

Re: storm in Hawai\'i

It was difficult climbing as there were no overhead TIP's at least no trusty overhead points. Had to set a few re-directs.

Re: storm in Hawai\'i

Here's a medium sized F. benjamina that I helped cleanup yesterday on the windward side. Went to class at 8:30 and my professor said he had a huge tree go down on his property, and so offered to help.

All the weight of the limbs were in the opposite direction of the way the tree came down, so must have been incredibly strong forced to push the whole tree opposite it's lean into his yard.

We were talking about the possible cause of the failure and he was explaining that the banyan tree used to be surrounded by eight or nine other trees and so was very crowded, which caused more upright growth with narrow crotch angles. I didn't ask about the horrible pruning cuts near the base of the
tree...

Of course I unplugged the tree before working in it

Re: storm in Hawai\'i

Ahhhhh...

Must be the one that came toward Oregon / Washington and killed like 5 people. Peak gusts over 120 mph...

Sound like the same one?

They are trying to compare it to the 1996 storm, but there ain't no way it compares to the 1962 storm to hit Oregon.

The sixty-two storm "Columbus Day Storm" had winds recorded at 145 mph and estimated at 179 mph at the Oregon coast.

That's about 40% of a wind storm than what just passed.

Lotsa flooding in parts of Oregon and Washington, and lotsa tree breakage in some parts.

At least you are getting out for fresh air.

Re: storm in Hawai\'i

Hey Leon! Actually drove up right away in the morning and found nothing that was in the immediate vicinity, which was a bit surprising considering the damage everywhere else. Ray was going to let me know if he found anything major and haven't heard a word yet... working there tomorrow though so I'm sure there's something to do...

There's ALWAYS something to do at the Arboretum! Let me know if any big ones came down. Also, say hello to Ray for me.

Re: storm in Hawai\'i

Nice boots.

Looks like you oiled them for the photo shoot !!

Looks the the weather cleared nice by the time you took the images.

Re: storm in Hawai\'i

Don't be fooled! That's Hawai'i for yah, it can look clear and five minutes later there's so much rain you can't see five feet in front of you.

Re: storm in Hawai\'i

Treeandsurf has taken a wonderful photograph. When we find ourselves up in the beautiful trees that God gave us, we should take time to consider for just one brief moment in time that the stars at night shine for all of us and God hath made it so that when our thoughts up in the tree as we look down turn to fear, we should remember that Jesus is right there with us keeping us safe from harm and communicating with God as to our progress.

There is so much we have yet to understand fully.

One does find oneself wondering about the decisions that led to the use of the Husky 338xp over the boisterous MS200T. The Lord does work in mysterious ways indeed.

Amen

Do you think it would of held up better if it was hooked up to 220 instead of 110?

Re: storm in Hawai\'i

I'll mention that in my final report!

Dr. Leonhardt said he was planning to use this in his pruning lecture next semester...

Climbed up to take some closer pics...
